While Gilles Mendel's 2013 Resort collection was as breathtaking as any he's done for J. Mendel, this season, alongside the designer's signature draped, floor-sweeping gowns and lush furs, were a number of surprising silhouettes — namely tight-fitting minis and slim cut trousers. Given that they were treated to the same intricate construction as the gowns, you can expect nothing but sheer sophistication no matter what silhouette the designer takes on.
It may not have been the best collection we've seen from Louis Vuitton — or even close to that — but there were some individual pieces to love among the layered looks shown. Among the standouts were 70s-style pants (though they arguably could have used some hemming), cropped-at-the-knee shorts, and dainty visors.
It may not have been the most memorable collection, but this season's Christian Dior lineup — the last under the direction of Bill Gaytten — was nothing if not a lesson in refined ladylike sophistication. While it would be hard to say "no" to any of the peplum tops or pleated gowns, here's to hoping Raf Simons brings back some of the Galliano-era drama.
Crop tops and leather aren't going anywhere if Alexander Wang has anything to say about it. Sticking to his usual neutral color palette the designer worked those elements in his uniquely sporty-chic style, which this season also brought along cutouts and chunky heels for some understated edge.
