Joan Smalls and Karlie Kloss grace W’s two July covers in images by Steven Meisel that are essentially the same except for the fact that Joan and Karlie are two different people. Forum members were thrilled that W placed not one, but two deserving models (who are not Kate Moss or Gisele Bundchen) on the covers of its July issue.
Some forum members thought Joan’s cover had a bit too much of a Tyra Banks/Beyoncé vibe, but as j’adorekapusta wrote, “Ms. Smalls is so freakishly beautiful. It's insane.” So who cares if she's doing her best diva impression? Plus, if you’re going to look like someone, Tyra and Beyoncé are complimentary comparisons.
Joan and Karlie also feature in a fourteen-page editorial by Meisel that forum members say is reminiscent of Richard Avedon’s work. “Some shots reminds me of 60s Avedon, others of 70s [Francesco] Scavullo... it's lovely,” iluvjeisa commented.
You can also expect an eight-page editorial with Naomi Campbell that was photographed by Emma Summerton, and additional features shot by Craig McDean, Patrick Demarchelier, and more. I’m kind of getting psyched for this issue to show up in my mailbox. I’ll be happy with either cover since they’re totally interchangeable as far as I’m concerned.
