Yet, despite all these totally surface-level similarities, Gandy hates his counterpart. He even told The New York Post he wouldn't work with her: “I don’t get on with Gisele. We don’t see eye to eye, we argue and we don’t enjoy working with each other...I'm not going to get on with anyone who takes it for granted or thinks they’re something special.”
Even though they're now pretty much in the same league career-wise, Gandy didn't have very much success until around 2005 or 2006. After graduating university in 2001, Gandy won a daytime TV modeling competition in the UK (he was born in Essex) and spent the following several years in relative obscurity, until he was noticed by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.
Let's compare his career trajectory to Gisele's: the Brazilian model was discovered by a scout when she was fourteen. Three years later, she walked on Alexander McQueen's iconic Spring 1998 runway, in addition to other London Fashion Week shows. The following year she landed campaigns with Missoni, Chloé, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Gianfranco Ferré, Ralph Lauren, and Versace. She arrived at success about a decade before Gandy and, unlike him, she's been wildly famous and adored for her entire adult life. I'm sure she does, as Gandy says, think she's "something special," because she's never had anyone tell her otherwise.
When Gandy was a stuggling model in his twenties, failure was a definite possibility. Maybe it was even probable. As a young man, Gandy had to live with the fear that he would never fulfill his early promise, and Gisele never truly had experienced an equivelent of that anxiety and fear. It doesn't seem surprising that Gandy would resent her for that, and that Gisele wouldn't be able to relate to someone who once had to confront the possibility that success might not be his due. I don't think I'd be able to stand Gisele's company very well, either. But dear David Gandy: you seem great. Call me!
