Get the Celeb Look: Steal Solange Knowles Signature Style

It must be hard to step out from behind Beyoncé’s shadow, but Solange Knowles has swiftly become a red carpet staple with as much sense of style, if not star power, as her sister. What makes Solange stand out is her no-fear attitude to fashion, whether it’s rocking her signature natural ‘do, pulling from the vintage vault, or putting together directional color combos. A model, DJ, and front row presence at the latest fashion shows, Solange even kept a daily look book blog for Vogue last February. Want to add some of the “it” that she’s got to your look but don’t have a stylist? Here are three tips to steal Solange Knowles’ style.

Tip #1: Make a statement with safari accessories

Though she’s known for her often outrageous looks, Knowles kept it casual while DJing at Carlo Pazolini flagship store opening in NYC. Knowles accessorized with a safari theme, wearing tan lace-up booties, a chunky gold bangle, cheetah clutch, and beaded bib necklace. While her olive leather skinnies and cream peplum tee had a neutral palette (except for that poppy lipstick), the details made this look exceptional.

1. Stella & Dot Zahara Bib Necklace – $248;  2. Burberry Brit Stretch Cotton Skinny Pants - $135;  3. Dorothy Perkins White Scuba Peplum Top - $35;  4. Michael by Michael Kors Leopard Pony Berkeley Clutch - $305;  5. Zara High Heel Ankle Boot With Laces - $40

At this point, we’ve all heard of color blocking, but only Knowles color blocks with prints. Outside of New York Fall Fashion Week, the style star wore a sky blue patterned Diane von Furstenberg suit from the Spring 2012 collection. She layered a contrasting coral blouse underneath, and polished off the primary colored look with banana yellow heels. How’s that for polished pattern mixing? The key to pulling off this look is to look for patterns in complementary colors, keeping one color constant (in this case white) to ground the look.

1. Topshop Co-Ord Bird Print Pyjama Jacket and Shorts - $180;  2. Forever 21 Pixel Oversize Top - $17.80;  3. ASOS Smart Shorts in Paisley Print - $30.44 and ASOS Blazer in Paisley Print - $66.97;  4. Coast Daisy Pearl Clutch - $75;  5. Aldo Mease High Heel - $80

You don’t have to have an invitation to an all-star gala to channel Knowles’ look at the Met Ball. She wore a custom canary yellow gown by Rachel Roy. A lover of vintage, Knowles has been sporting peplums since the inception of the trend, and this strapless dress featured a unique boxy peplum and flowing skirt—but it was the punchy color that really made this look shine. For your next summer party, pick a sunny yellow peplum dress in a more wearable skirt length, accessorize with a sparkly box clutch and a gold cage cuff, and you’re sure to turn heads like Solange.

1. Lulu’s Custard Danish Yellow Dress - $41;  2. Jane Norman Silver Glitter Box Clutch - $44;  3. Oh My Love Wrap Chiffon Peplum Dress - $60.88;  4. AX Paris Cap Sleeve Peplum Dress - $39;  5. ASOS Cage Arm Cuff - $20.87
