Alice McCall Pre-Summer 2013 'Sphinxes Without Secrets'

Oscar Wilde’s short story The Sphinx Without a Secret is plagued with suspense and mystery, both of which run high in Alice McCall’s Pre-Summer 2013 campaign. The suspense stems from a question associated with all McCall’s whimsical collections, namely, “What is the exact date can we buy it?” — while the mystery is more to do with how the campaign itself was created.

Starring Sydney's Kaila Hart, the striking campaign blends together elements of Classical and Art Nouveau and splashes them with colours that probably hadn’t even been invented in 500BC. Shot by Thom Kerr in a Bankstown prop department before being showered in a kaleidoscope of tie-dye purples and Hulkish neon green, it paints a picture that could make even ancient Roman sex practices seem dull.

Against such a glaring backdrop, it’s no small feat that the clothing still demands attention. McCall’s signature intricate prints and embroidered details snake their way over would-be girly mini dresses, while delicately modern cut-outs put a daring spin on flowing Grecian gowns. Finished with gleaming armour-esque bangles and hair straight from the pages of a graphic novel, this is McCall at her most covetable.
