BILLINGS- You've no doubt heard of ‘March Madness', and if you were paying attention in history class ‘The Ides of March' should ring a bell.
But what about: ‘Mustache March',' No Shave November', ‘Mo'vember', or ‘Frebru-hairy'?
If you were scratching your head while reading through that list of unofficial holidays for fans of follicle development, there's a group in Billings looking to bring
you up to speed.
Formed just two weeks ago, STACHE, the Stately Team for Appreciation Contributions to Hair Excellence, is already making its presence known to those sporting mustaches (or moustaches for our friends from across the pond) in the Magic City.
"It was really born a few weeks ago," said co-founder Svein Newman. "My friend Nick and I got together and we were talking about how mustaches are taking off all over Billings, all over Montana and all over the country."
On Thursday, STACHE presented the first Mustache Appreciation Achievement Award.
The lucky recipient: 25-year handlebar mustache Hercules and local business owner of Montana Avenue's H Bar Hatworks, Mike Hodges.
"First and foremost, we believe in giving credit where credit is due and Mike has an incredible mustache," said Newman. "And not only does he have a great mustache himself but he's really active in promoting mustaches in the community."
According to Newman, Hodges' role as a cookie duster ambassador is multi-faceted.
For one, if you haven't seen the H Bar' logo before, take a gander at the picture above.
You'll not only notice the beautifully painted mustache, but the name, H Bar, is an abbreviation of the style of ‘stache Hodges prefers to sport.
"People couldn't remember my name but they could remember the mustache," said Hodges about naming his business in honor of his misplaced eyebrow.
However, the hairy heroism doesn't end there. Hodges also has a habit of identifying and helping his customers fight BULS, also known as Bare Upper Lip Disorder.
"I have a lot of little kids that will come in here-and they will stare," said Hodges. "You know they're polite and well-mannered and they don't want to say anything. But they're thinking, 'What is going on with that guy's face?' So, I'll get in the drawer, pull out a little mustache and ask them if they want a little mustache, too. And inevitably, they all say yes. And they'll stick it under their nose, they'll look in the mirror. And I've seen them actually look old enough where they drive mom and dad home that night."
For his efforts, STACHE awarded Hodges with a gigantic check written out for a "priceless" amount, a free growler from Uber Brew and a free container of Mustache wax.
Hodges seemed impressed by the award.
"This is as cool as cool gets," said Hodges.
STACHE says they are planning to recognize more outstanding contributions in facial hair growth in the future.

In recent years, March has allowed men to show off their mustache either for charity, or for their own amusement.
In his book "One Thousand Mustaches: A Cultural History of the Mo," facial hair expert and beard scholar Allan Peterkin, takes readers on tour of the crumb-catcher.
He spoke with Sunrise 7's Sean Caldwell about proper grooming to keep your stache looking sharp.
On Tuesday afternoon, he stepped behind his barber chair at the Skyland Barber Shop, grabbed a brush and worked it through the protruding, salt-and-pepper hair on his face. His beard, normally a lot shorter, hung down to the top of his Harley Davidson shirt.
Gilbert says his beard is something he could never imagine being without. In fact, he's never even thought about shaving it. It's become a way of life.
And that's the case for many people who live in the foothills and mountains. Beards mean more than fashion.
Facial hair has always been an art, with styles such as the modern goatee, the long, white ZZ Top look, the Santa Claus look and, most recently, the long, fat beards like the ones worn by the Robertson family on television's "Duck Dynasty."
Gilbert's goal is to grow his beard down to his waistline. His desire for a beard grew from the lack of a desire to shave, he said.
"We all had long hair back in the day," Gilbert said. "We' re talking about the late 1960s."
The desire to avoid a daily shave is just one of many reasons behind furry faces in Henderson County. People from all walks of life grow beards.
Bearded for the Gospel
Chuck Kuester's beard started out as freedom of expression. The 63-year-old had just been discharged from the Marines and he "wanted to look as non-Marine as possible at the time."
"I didn't have any money," he said, "but I did have freedom."
Almost immediately, the facial hair felt like a part of his personality.
"From the moment it stopped itching, it felt like I was meant to be a bearded man," he said.
As Kuester has aged, however, the long, white hair on his face has taken on a new role. Now Kuester uses his beard to bond and connect with Christian men. He found the national group Bearded Gospel Men, and decided to start a local chapter.
Bearded Gospel Men WNC started on Facebook, and the group, using their beards as a commo nality, was brought together to "glorify God." The group has 75 likes on Facebook, and at least 16 of those men want to start meeting monthly.
"It's more of a fellowship thing and to make those smooth, shaving men jealous," Kuester said.
Society of beards
For some men, beards are definitely a lifestyle. It comes with the mountain region and doing mountainous things. That's the case for a group of guys that get together on the first Thursday of every month to ride bikes and hang out at a local restaurant.
The group started after Chad Banner, an agent with the Brevard Insurance Agency, went to a wedding in Charleston. He discovered the Holy City Beard and Mustache Society, then came home and shared the idea with his friends.
"The core group of us had beards," he said, so all of his friends jumped on the concept, and the Pisgah Beard Society was born. Banner is the president of the society.
One of the society's key members is Wes Dickson. Dic kson, 36, is the owner of Sycamore Cycles in Brevard and Hendersonville. Dickson is not just a business owner, but also a member of the Brevard City Council.
His wife has never seen him without a beard, he joked. He began growing his beard in 2000, and it's a product of the world around him, he said.
"A lot of people I dealt with day in and day out had beards," he said of growing up in Pisgah.
And then there are his current surroundings. Dickson is a mountain biker and he lives that rugged, outdoor lifestyle.
"There's some lifestyle built into it," he said. "There's a good portion of mountain bikers that have beards."
Bearded identity
John Williams, 37, has taught science at North Henderson High School for the past seven years. He's also an assistant wrestling coach. He's been growing his beard for the past 20 years.
It's been short, long and has even trimmed down to a goatee. The one thing it hasn't been is â€" gone. And Williams d oesn't plan to shave it. It's a part of who he is.
The identity factor is why many men say they have grown beards, kept them and refused to shave them.
"Everything (in society) is changing so much," Williams said about the acceptability of beards. "Individuality is more important these days."
Beards don't get stares anymore, he said, and shows such as "Duck Dynasty" have driven the look into popularity.
For Dickson, even politics hasn't changed his desire to keep his beard. To shave his beard would be to alter his identity, he said.
"It's just one of those things," he said. "I've never hid from who I am. I am who I am."
As Dickson said, the trend may stem from a man's surroundings, family and friends, but for whatever reason, beards are becoming popular again.
"It seems to be picking up as the cool thing to do," Pisgah Beard Society's Banner said. "Maybe a part of it is the mountains."

How about Rollie Fingers, Dennis Eckersley, Mike Schmidt and Keith Hernandez? Mustache. Or how about the caveman-esque beards sported by Brian Wilson, Jayson Werth and now Josh Reddick? Then there are more unique facial garbs like Scott Spiezio’s red soul patch and the ever changing facial hair that Ryan Spilborghs used to sport. And who has a hard time remembering Todd Helton without his thick goatee?
Of course some of the most distinctive facial styles belong to that of closers. For some reason, closers seem to think that having some ridiculous type of facial hair will increase their success rate. I think Mariano Rivera would beg to differ, but nonetheless the attitude remains.
Brian Wilson and his replacement in San Francisco, Sergio Romo, both sported big black beards. Jason Motte in St. Louis might actually have had a Cardinal nesting underneath his chin last season. Joel Hanrahan looked like an actual pirate closing for Pittsburgh. You know it's a friendship you should keep when you show up to her house 25 minutes late and toss the contents of your purse all over her sparkling clean table. You do an archeological dig for the waxing strip, peel the random Band-Aid off of it and promptly affix it to your upper lip.
"WAX IT ON THE COUNT OF THREE!" you yell, and you swear that the sound you are hearing is the very last shard of your self-respect shattering on the floor.

This morning I attended a Mary Kay party with this same friend. She requested that she go by the pseudonym "Giselle." That name has always represented the term for a bodily substance college boys laugh about, but whatever. She waxed my upper lip, so I'm probably going to let it go.

The best time to pluck, FYI, is on the way to church. It's the only time I'm in the passenger seat. As we're rolling the rolling toy box out of the garage, Scott's eye catches a glimmer of the tweezer in my hand in the late morning sun.
"Can you at least put the tweezers down before we roll into the church parking lot?"
"Well, that depends. Do you want to continue to feel like you're making out with Sasquatch?"
This is the time when the kids are usually eager to interject, especially after I define Sasquatch.

The people at my church are super awesome and gracious and kind, so even if there are bats in the cave or I'm sporting Frankenstein's sideburns, no one's going to say a thing... except "Giselle."
I see her coming at me down the hall, and I'm proud to show her my hairless upper lip.

Baseball is indeed a sport that can pull unique emotions out of a person and tug on their heart strings.
So what makes baseball so unique in its culture? I will be focusing on one aspect of baseball’s culture and that is facial hair.
Obviously, facial hair is not exclusive to baseball, but it helps identify fans with baseball. When you think Goose Goosage, what do you think? Mustache. How about Rollie Fingers, Dennis Eckersley, Mike Schmidt and Keith Hernandez? Mustache. Or how about the caveman-esque beards sported by Brian Wilson, Jayson Werth and now Josh Reddick? Then there are more unique facial garbs like Scott Spiezio’s red soul patch and the ever changing facial hair that Ryan Spilborghs used to sport. And who has a hard time remembering Todd Helton without his thick goatee?
Of course some of the most distinctive facial styles belong to that of closers. For some reason, closers seem to think that having some ridiculous type of facial hair will increase their success rate. I think Mariano Rivera would beg to differ, but nonetheless the attitude remains.
Brian Wilson and his replacement in San Francisco, Sergio Romo, both sported big black beards. Jason Motte in St. Louis might actually have had a Cardinal nesting underneath his chin last season. Joel Hanrahan looked like an actual pirate closing for Pittsburgh. Sticking with the pirate theme, John Axford of the Brewers looked like Captain Morgan and Chris Perez of the Indians just looked…homeless. Whether it’s intimidation or something else entirely, it’s clear that some closers think looking the part is almost as important as playing the part.

Well by now you all know that I have a sick obsession with facial hair. In fact, I double as the “Chief of Stache†for another famous baseball blog…The Hall of Very Good. So you should not be surprised that this is happening. I just can not help myself. Â
At this point, it would be silly to roll out some John Axford mustache facts because lately my boy has been rocking the beard. That being the case, I decided to look into some of the gnarliest facial hair in film history for our boy. Focusing more on beards, or facial accesories formerly known as beards. As you may or may not know, Mr. Axford has a degree in film from Notre Dame.  And these are not just any options, these are the types of face blankets that will strike fear into all who oppose them.Â
For the official record, I would like to point out that in our predictions article last month I said that John Axford would rock a beard at some point this season. That has already come to pass…so I am kind of a sorcerer now.Â

1) The Dr. King Schultz (Django Unchained)- If you have not seen Django Unchained, you probably should catch that.  It is beautifully violent, and the facial hair is out of sight. What makes Dr. Schultz’s (Christoph Waltz) beard so amazing is that it doubles as a handle-bar mustache!! Not only do you have the beard to keep your face warm, but when you feel particularly saucy…you give your stache handles a little twirl. Any MLB player who saw this movie and then stands in the batters box to face The Ax, while cower in fear. Maybe he has a tiny single-bullet gun up his sleeve? Or a nasty 97 mph cut fastball? Either way, this particular face ornament would be legendary.Â
2) The Pai Mei (Kill Bill Vol.2)- I promise that these are the only two Quentin Tarantino movie finalists. But who isn’t intimidated by a fu manchu that hangs down to mid-chest? The answer is no one. Can you imagine Axford striking someone out…walking around the mound…stroking his facial hair…and then throwing it behind his back? This move would be both intimidating and a slap in the face of would be batters. Maybe that facial hair comes with in structions for the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique, I don’t know. If this were to become a reality, the growing needs to begin now. It could be ready to unleash just in time for a playoff run in September.
3) Bill the Butcher (Gangs of New York) â€" This would be a new take on an old classic. Yes, John would have to bring back the handle bar mustache and keep that baby nice and waxed (which was not a problem in 2011). Here is the catch, now you have to add some sweet turn of the century mutton chops to the equation. In the film, Daniel Day Lewis is one of the baddest dudes on the planet…in large part because of that amazingly sophisticate d manscaping. I already know that #59 can rock the handlebar, but with the current beard it would be only too easy to shave that into some rocking mutton burns.Â
4) The Captain Barbossa (Pirates of the Caribbean 1-4) â€" You may be asking, “Lou, why him and not Capt. Jack Sparrowâ€. The answer is simple…chin braids are dumb and pirates were not the type of people who would go out of their way to sit in front of a mirror so that they could braid their chin hair. There I said it. Barbossa looks like a real pirate. I can look at that guy and genuinely believe that he was at sea 340 days a year . What makes this particular facial scraggle unique, is it’s lack of fullness. This is an unhealthy beard. Maybe that is what happens when you have scurvy…or are undead for many years. In spite of all that, this beard would look terrifying on Axford. Plus, we could all pitch in and get him a little monkey who never seems to die…plus we cold teach it to steal gold coins.Â
5) The Dr. Loveless (Wild Wild West) â€" Look, we all know this movie sucked…big time. However, British master actor/director Kenneth Branagh rocks one of the most intricate facial hair configurations of all time. In the old west, the facial hair made the man..or in the case of this movie, half of a man. Either way, when you consider that this was done with an old school razor (in theory, of course obviously Hollywoo d has fancy tricks), it makes this one of the baddest looking beards in the history of film. The mustache portion is pretty standard, but the beard…oh, the beard. In the region commonly known as a soul patch, now resides what looks like a whales tale. Then, rather then having facial hair running up the side of his lips, he has cleaned that out…and given his beard wings. WINGS!!! ON HIS BEARD!!!! Ridiculous? Kind of. Amazing? Yup. I would love to see our Canadian closer slamming the door while rocking this amazing facial affair.Â

A: Yes, it definitely is cute. But it takes weeks to grow out before a beard is soft. If you are going to be kissing a girl for the first time, don't put her through the pain of two-day-old stubble. Think about if a girl had a full mustache and she was coming in to kiss you. It would hurt! And a guy would whine about it, just like they whine when a sweater's not the softest thing they've ever touched. So I feel like it's only fair that guys keep a groomed face.
Q: So basically if you're planning to kiss a girl, you should be clean?
A: Yeah. Keep it clean. That stubble gives girls rashes, and it also makes a girl break out because of hair oils. So if you insist on having facial hair, at least maintain it so it's not dirty.
