Look of the Day: Gwyneth Paltrows Black Leather Hugo Boss Dress

Gwyneth Paltrow presents Boss Nuit Pour Femme Fragance Madrid

Who: Gwyneth Paltrow

Where: Boss Nuit Pour Femme launch party Madrid, Spain

Why we like it: Since Gwyneth was celebrating the launch of the latest fragrance from Hugo Boss, it was only fitting that the award-winning actress wore the brand’s black leather cap sleeve dress. A pair of matching bow-accented Jimmy Choo Maya pointed-toe pumps capped off the look.

Kate Upton Does Her Bombshell Best on the Cover of Vogue Italias November Issue (Forum Buzz)

Vogue Italia November 2012 - Kate Upton photographed by Steven MeiselBuxom blonde Sports Illustrated beauty, Kate Upton is a controversial figure (forgive the unintentional pun) in the fashion world, as she clearly doesn’t fit the waify, quirky, androgynous mold that is so popular at the moment. Upton is the kind of pinup-style girl that we haven’t seen in a while, and truth be told, I’m starting to find her (and her silhouette) refreshing. After seeing her in countless borderline raunchy, barely-there bikinis, it’s a bit of a surprise to see how Anna Wintour, Vogue, and the rest of the high fashion world have embraced her. It’s also kind of surprising to see just how good she is at modeling high fashion. Despite being nearly naked so often, Upton can wear clothes really well. Her latest high fashion foray is on the cover of Vogue Italia’s November issue, and though she had a few detractors in the Fashion Spot forums, many were surprisingly pleased to see her there.

“When I saw the thread title I was like why??” jmrmartinho posted. “But this is just so gorgeous. Not only the best Kate has ever looked but the best Vogue Italia cover produced this year…Perfect!”

EliseCRocks wrote: “I understand the fact that her transformation from sexy to high fashion was shocking and upsetting because of what kind of model she was, but I think its time now to let that go, obviously Carine Roitfeld, Anna Wintour, Steven Meisel, and now Franca Sozzani are supporting her, so I don't think she's going anywhere, so I would hope people will start making judgment out of the actual image and not out of her reputation as the model she was... Now on that note, the image is stunning! She looks ‘seductive’ like the title of the issue, and, in my opinion, leaving her reputation to the side, not trashy at all. Just the perfect balance. She has a face that translates well into the sexy market but can do high fashion too.”

“This looks really good and very Italian!” miguelalmeida exclaimed. “She looks like a superb, luscious, luxurious Italian woman, with a great figure, body and sexy cleavage, very poised and beautiful! Everyone that is on top of this industry supports her, soo that means she's really good and this cover shows it, this is one of my favorite Vogue Italia covers of 2012! Kate already showed us she's a good high fashion model, too bad some of you don't embrace it, because the results are very good. At first I didn't like her, but with time she proved she deserves being in this industry,” he added.

Though I wasn’t too keen on Upton when she exploded off the cover of Sports Illustrated and did the "Cat Daddy” for Terry Richardson, she’s really starting to win me over. I’m curious to see what her Steven Meisel-photographed editorial for Vogue Italia looks like, but for now I’ll be content with this cover.

Step Out of the Box with Brnice Marlohe's Suprising Smoky Eye

alt

Who: Bérénice Marlohe

Where: The London premiere of Skyfall

Why we like it: This look might be slightly outrageous for everyday but for a night out, it's a shock of color that would invigerate an otherwise unremarkable look.

How to get it at home: Start off by applying a base that will give you flawless coverage such as Kat Von D's Lock-It Tattoo Founadtion, $34. Keep your foundation brush handy because it will be helpful to clear up any fallout from the dark shadows. Shape your brows but don't give too much definition using Hourglass's Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil, $32. Now, if you're willing to give this look a try at home, you're obviously not shy when it comes to makeup, colors like this bold pink are often hard to find so it's worth investing in a multi-color palette. Sephora's new Color Daze Blockbuster, $49.50, offers 148 colors, including a few blues and pinks perfect for this look. To get Berenice's bold eye, start with a slate toned navy and apply it over the lid and under the lashline. Blend it well into the inner corner. Then go in with a brighter blue in the creaseline. Lastly, take a bright pop of pink on a smudger brush and apply it to the inner third of your lower lash line. Line your waterline with a navy liner such as NARS's Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner in Rue Saint-Honore, $23 and finish off your eyes with BECCA's Ultimate Mascara in Black, $24. With such a bold look, you want a nude lipstick so apply a few coats of a peachy-nude color such as Sunday Riley's Modern Lip Color in Coral Reef, $32.

Twitterati Fashion Recap: Blair Waldorf Bobs Her Hair, Will Kanye & Karl Collab?, and More

This week on #Twitterati, Leighton Meester chops off her long hair after Gossip Girl ends, Kanye and Karl meetings spark collaboration rumors, and everyone is talking about Jessica Biel's pink wedding gown. For more #Twitterati goodness, including what Kanye wore to the H&M/Margiela party, read up on the most happening fashion moments, events, and quotes in the Twittersphere.

Instagram via Just Jared

Huffington Post tweeted, "Goodbye, Blair Waldorf: Leighton Meester chops her hair off." E! News added, "Leighton Meester Chops Off Her Hair—Do You Like?" Just Jared apparently does, tweeting, "Um @itsmeleighton chopped off her hair!!! And looking so fresh and pretty!! Glamour added, "Leighton Meester chopped off her hair! (She's all edgy now!)."

As to what caused this major makeover, Lookbooker explains, "Leighton Meester bobbed her hair now that she's out of her Gossip Girl contract. We love a good hair freedom story." So do we! As for what's most important, home-girl apparently feels the same way, as reported by US Weekly, who tweeted, " #GossipGirl's @itsmeleighton says she loves her dramatic new haircut." You go Blair! I mean Leighton.

So the rumor goes, "Is @KarlLagerfeld really collaborating with @kanyewest? (British Vogue). "Are Karl Lagerfeld and Kanye West hatching fashionable plans?" (British Elle). According to The Cut, "Kanye West, Karl Lagerfeld talked 'business over lunch' at the Mercer Hotel." A meeting that prompted the rest of the fashion world including the peeps at StyleCaster to speculate/tweet, "The New KK Power Couple: Kanye & Karl Lagerfeld #FancyMenWhoLunch." So do you think Karl and Kanye discussed a possible fashion collabo, or where they just gossiping about everyone and everything? Hoping for the former, most probably the latter.

Speaking of Kanye, Marie Claire tweeted, "Our report on the @MMM_Official x H&M launch last night. Kanye was there! And his jacket was Margiela (...for @HM)." I mean was there ever any doubt that Kanye would fail to show up at an event where he could break into song and rap about one of his all-time favorite designers? Didn't think so either.

While JT (Justin Timberlake for those of you who don't know), is used to hogging all the attention, regardless of who is currently on his arm, this time around the former boy-band member took a back-seat to his wife's wedding gown — I mean, it was Giambattista Valli couture. Yes that wedding gown — the one featured on the cover of People magazine.

Here is what everyone on Twitter had to say about Biel's pink Giambattista Valli handmade creation:

US Weekly tweeted, "Basic white? Not for this bride: Jessica Biel wore pink for her big day!" Fashionista.com added, "Have you seen Jessica Biel's (pink!) Giambattista Valli wedding gown..and are we the only ones who think Jessica Biel’s pink wedding dress looks an awful lot like Lisa’s from Coming to America?"

As for the man of the hour? British Vogue tells us, "Giambattista Valli "couldn't be more proud" that Jessica Biel asked him to design her wedding dress."

SoHo Welcomes Sam Edelman: Closed Set with Julie Bensman

When I first step into Sam Edelman's 57th Street townhome office, I feel inclined to take off my shoes. Not to show him I’m sporting my favorite suede boots from last season's collection nor in hopes I might execute a casual swap with one of the pretty pairs in his adjacent showroom. Rather, the space is so bright and inviting with an air of approachable sophistication, I feel instantly at home.

With crystal chandeliers hanging high overhead, a well-edited mix of modern-meets-vintage furniture and the perfectly curated selection of art and fashion looks lining the walls, this is the definition of Upper East Side chic that would send Charlotte York to heaven.

The antithesis of Harry Goldenblatt, Mr. Edelman enters the room, tall and commanding, greeting legions of ladies typing away at their desks. Well-manicured hands match impeccably-accessorized feet, natch. We proceed to his office, where the conversation shifts from uptown surroundings to Sam's new SoHo store, opening in just a few days. Not surprisingly, design and decor were of utmost importance in creating an environment that not only spoke to the Sam Edelman girl, but also showcased products with an inspired authenticity for which the brand is known.

Here, he and I chat about the Sam Edelman girl (a young Charlotte, perhaps), St. Charles, IL (my hometown) and the downtown digs that took him nearly 18 months to discover.

JB: Why was SoHo the perfect place for the new store?

SE: In the eight years this company has been around, I’ve been shopping the world for fashion and trends — never to copy, but to really see what’s happening. I look at pathways and people on the street: what they’re eating and wearing, their hair and makeup… I love Le Marais district in Paris and 3rd Street in Los Angeles. I really love London — it’s definitely on my to-do list. But with all the shopping I’ve done, I’ve never seen anything like the phenomenon that is SoHo. A Tuesday afternoon in SoHo looks like a Saturday in LA.

When it came to choosing the exact location, I didn’t want to be on Broadway. Rather, a quality environment where I could build my own identity and be surrounded by neighbors like Prada and Frye, stores that have the integrity I’m looking for. Sam Edelman is a luxury, aspirational brand and this is the greatest location for me in the world to build a home.

JB: How important was the interior design of the store in creating a shopping experience that complements the product?

SE: I could have done it myself, but I’m not an architect. I wanted the best. When I drive a car, I want to know the best engineer designed it. When I go to a restaurant, I want to know the chef is world class. And when I design a store, I want an architect that can do a much better job than I can.

I hired an amazing architect in David Mann — I love everything he’s ever done and he really shared my vision for this store. It was the most amazing chemistry — I love his design theory and the fact that he truly understands who my girl is.

JB: Who is that girl?

SE: My dream customer is anywhere from 16- to 29-years-old. She might be from St. Charles and dreams of moving to a Manhattan apartment on the Upper East Side with a doorman, fabulous mirrors and plush carpeting. Of course, we all know when she gets here, it will be six girls squeezed into a tiny shoebox apartment, but this store is the manifestation of that aspirational dream. This store is for her.

JB: Where do you find inspiration for your collections each season?

SE: I think I’m most famous for having a muse — and I find her in different places. Sometimes, I find her in a European magazine or at the baggage claim in an airport terminal…I actually don’t like to shop New York as much as other designers might, because I like to feel as if I’m discovering my muse. Whether it’s Antwerp, Copenhagen, Morocco, or London, I’m always looking — and when I find her, she starts me on my voyage.

JB: What’s next for the brand?

SE: I’m always focused on quality. If I owned a popular restaurant, I’d take a table out. I stand for integrity and longevity — and that’s how I built this company. I do believe the brand will continue to grow and I think we will do that with brand extension — everything from handbags to outerwear, swim to intimates.

I’m very, very lucky — I can do almost anything I want to do with my life. Everything about this brand is completely from my heart – and the day that goes away, I won’t be here.

Natalia Vodianova Channels a Lifeless Mannequin on Vogue UKs December Cover (Forum Buzz)

Vogue UK December 2012 - Natalia Vodianova photographed by Mario Testino

Vogue UK’s December 2012 cover may mark Natalia Vodianova’s tenth appearance on the magazine, but it certainly isn’t her best showing. There are so many things wrong with this cover that it’s hard to know where to start. But, I’ll give it a try.

First: Natalia looks frozen and lifeless. More on that later.

Second: This is a DECEMBER cover. Does this color scheme and Valentino Resort 2013 jacket make you think of cuddling up by a fire, trimming a Christmas tree, and getting tipsy at a holiday party? I thought not.

Third: What is with that “POP” font in the lower left corner?! Not chic. C’mon Vogue

Back to Natalia though. Sure forum members can be nitpicky, but they had a lot to say about Natalia on this cover. “She's honestly looking like one of those wax figures,” Flashbang wrote: “There's no life whatsoever. The more I see the cover, the more terrified I get.”

Iluvjeisa commented: “If she didn't look so anxious and eager to please, this would have been a good cover. But she really has the look of someone who has tried really hard but is unsure they made the cut and is concerned that, if she smiles a little wider, some wrinkles might show.”

At least VogueDisciple93 kind of came to Natalia’s defense. “If I had to wear that awful jacket I would have the same expression,” he quipped.

So, maybe Natalia has lost her mojo a little bit, but what’s Vogue UK’s excuse with the fonts and the styling?

If You're Safe in NYC Right Now, Take This Opportunity to Be Cozy, Volunteer

It turns out there are remarkably few fashion angles to a hurricane story. Natural disasters have this annoying habit of putting things in perspective and summoning our hidden scruples: People lost their homes and lives last night; over six million people on the East Coast don't have power right now.

I'm just saying, I can't really bring myself to make fun of Robert Pattinson's new twelve-million-dollar contract with Dior fragrances for men. (Sorry, wait, can't stop: that's A LOT of money. I didn't know there were so many Twihards in the market for luxury men's fragrances.)

Anyway, I just wanted to ... you know, acknowledge the fact that a superstorm hit New Jersey last night and lots of people and places are struggling to cope with the damage. I hope you're safe and I hope that if you're safe, you're wearing the warmest, coziest socks you can find in your drawer and will join me in my pledge to spend the rest of the week in leggings. Wearing comfortable clothing and hanging out with your pets is the stuff of silver linings.

If you can't curb the impulse to spend money while you're marooned (eek!) stuck in your apartment until the MTA resumes services a few days from now, skip American Apparel's truly indecent "☁ ☂ ϟ Hurricane Sandy Sale! ϟ ☂ ☁" and instead, donate $10 to the American Red Cross by texting "redcross" to the number 90999.

Better yet, you could volunteer. The Red Cross is actively seeking volunteers and New York Cares is also coordinating Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. This is a good time to try to help.

Style.com/Print Spring 2013 Issue - Cara Delevingne photographed by Matt Irwin

Fashion loves controversial figures, and model/socialite Cara Delevingne is definitely a bit of a controversial figure – in the Fashion Spot forums at least. She’s been accused of only getting fashion jobs because of her socialite status, of being annoying for pulling faces and putting her personality out there, but Cara’s got an undeniably beautiful face and she wouldn’t be climbing the fashion ranks if her name was all she had to bank on. One of Cara’s latest coups is gracing the cover of Style.com/Print’s Spring 2013 issue. Matt Irwin photographed the British covergirl in a tight, perfectly imperfect beauty shot with slightly mussed brows and smudges of pink lipstick marring her pout.

“It's amazing! I love the smeared lipstick. It looks not so boring,” DariaDeva posted about the cover.

“I don't know why, but it makes me smile,” Egoiste wrote. “Maybe because she is so fierce, dangerous, and then she has lipstick on her face, like little kid.”

Lagerfeldboy commented: “Those captivating eyes with the wing liner and the excessive mascara create such a visually breathtaking beauty close-up and cover. I even love the little imperfection of the smeared makeup,” he added.

In addition to a profile on Cara (whom Mario Testino calls the “new Kate Moss”), this issue features an interview and portfolio showcase on Nicolas Ghesquiere and his Spring 2013 Balenciaga collection, a feature on Alexander Wang’s casting process for Spring 2013, a feature on the “fashion marriage” of Marc Jacobs and stylist Katie Grand, and the fashion face-off between Raf Simons at Dior and Hedi Slimane at YSL. There’s also a whole lot more style.com coverage of the Spring 2013 fashion season in print form, making this a must-have overview of the most recent Fashion Month.
