Spotlight Stylist - Drew Noreen

Drew Noreen, a fresh up and coming stylist, has been creating massive waves with his gorgeous cuts and colours. This young man from Pucci Salon in Scottsdale, Arizona is a stylist you should really keep your eye on seeing as he is definitely going to go straight to the top because he's just absolutely oozing with talent! Read on to find out more about Drew.

How many years have you been a stylist?

I have happily been a stylist now for four years.

Why did you choose this profession?

I chose this profession because there is nothing more satisfying that creating beauty. It's amazing to have the power to change the way people feel about themselves, both inside and out.

Did you go to school to become a stylist or are you self-taught?

I attended Penrose Academy for my Cosmetology license. I had always done my friends hair and makeup prior to enrolling, so I suppose to some extent I'm self taught.
Where do you draw inspiration for your work?

I am inspired by so many different things. It could be everything from a flower to clothing, magazines to everyday people and of course my peers. There is beauty in everything.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you while cutting someone else's hair?

The funniest thing... I'd have to say it would have to be the time that I was cleaning up one of my male clients with my trimmers when he turned his head all of a sudden and I carved a chunk out of his hair line. We blended it in to disguise it, but at the time it was pretty funny.

What is your favourite part of being a stylist?

My favourite part of being a stylist is that everyday I get to use my creative abilities to make people feel and look beautiful.

What is a product you're addicted to at the moment?

I have serious addiction to Oribe products. Specifically the Supershine Moisturizing Crème! It gives the hair a soft touchable finish while protecting and building shine.

If you could style anyone's hair in the world, who would it be?

Meryl Streep. Hands down. To me, she is the epitome of a classy yet strong, modern day woman.

What is the most difficult part about your profession?

I would have to say the most difficult part, for me, is the pressure I put on myself to always create the 'perfect' look, but I work best under pressure, so to some degree it balances itself.

What hairstyle is "in" this season? Why?

This season I'm seeing a lot of braiding. I think the reason why the braid has become such a hot trend is due to its many variations. I could probably think of 1,000 ways to use and style any type of braid.

Do you have any advice for men and women who colour their hair?

If I was to give any advice to to people who colour their hair, it would be to keep it soft and natural. Especially for men! We seem to be moving away from 'fashion' colours and placement and more towards an enhanced, natural feel. Combing colour through mens hair and balayaged hi-lights for women is a great way to achieve a softer result.

What is the biggest problem you see with hair today?

The biggest problem I see the most is not a current hair trend or style, but the clients lack of knowledge when it comes to taking care of their hair. It is so imperative that we educate our clients on WHY their hair needs certain products and the benefits of blow-styling their hair as opposed to using heat tools. If we don't take the time to do this, how can we guarantee the quality of our work?

What is your favourite style to work with?

That's an easy one! My favourite style is a classic style. Whether it's a hot roller set, french twist or finger wave, I love it all!

What is the worst thing you can do to your hair?

The worst thing you can do is constantly change your hair colour. The stress that it puts on your hair by opening and closing the cuticle to pack it full of or eliminate colour molecules can be extremely damaging. Always consult your stylist about the integrity of your hair before making any drastic changes.

What is the best thing you can do to keep your hair looking healthy and beautiful?

The absolute best thing you can do is develop a regular care regimen. Getting trims when necessary and receiving conditioning treatments targeted to your hair's needs will help keep your locks shiny and looking healthy. Also making sure you have the right products to care for your hair at home.

What is the most popular style you perform on a day to day basis?

The most popular style I do is a medium to long layered cut with a strong, voluminous blow-style. Women love the look of fullness and movement in their hair. They're addicted to it!

What are some products that you use regularly?

I am such an advocate for Oribe Hair Care. I must admit, it's not only the only products that I use on my clients but they're also the only products I use on myself. Every product within the line does what it says and delivers more than desirable results that last! Most popular is the Dry Texturizing Spray. It creates wearable volume and texture while absorbing excess oils with taking away all of the shine.

For women who can't afford big budget hair care, are there any products that you can buy from the store that you could recommend?

If you are a woman (or man) on a budget, I would recommend Not Your Mother's Way to Grow shampoo and conditioner. It's developed to repair and strengthen your hair, helping to encourage growth without weighing hair down. This does not help to grow new hair but is great for the hair you already have!

What has been your favourite era in hair styling?

My favourite era so far has been the 1950's. I just love the variations of styles through this era. Actually, if you look at current fashion magazines and red carpets, you'll see a lot of styles paying homage to the 50's.

Do you have any tips to prevent/overcome bad hair days?

It can be more often than not that we have bad hair days. On these days, try getting creative. Try a new product to tame your frizz, pull it up in a fun, unique way or simply wash, condition and re-style. When I feel like I'm having a bad hair day, I usually just go with it. Sometimes it can be easier not to fight it.
