Want longer, fuller lashes that last without the hassle? Skip the mascara and falsies and try eyelash extensions, Hollywood’s secret to instant glamour. If you’ve been tempted but have never had a reason to try ‘em, now is the time. Pros Courtney Akai from the Courtney Akai Lash Boutique and Yuki DelliPaoli from Butterfly Kiss Eyelash Extensions separate fact from fiction and dish on their signature tips and tricks below.
The Fashion Spot: Why should someone get eyelash extensions?
Courtney Akai: People should go for lash extensions for that little extra something more for their eyes. They’re also perfect for getting ready in five minutes or less. Lashes are ideal for women who don’t want to wear makeup, especially during the summertime. And last but not least, they’re amazing for special occasions like weddings.
tFS: How long do they last?
CA: Extensions from start to finish last 6 to 8 weeks. We recommend a touchup every 3 to 4 weeks.
tFS: Do eyelash extensions make your natural eyelashes fall out?
CA: This is the biggest myth when it comes to extensions. If lashes are applied properly and to each individual lash, they won’t fall out. We have clients who’ve been getting lashes done for years and their eyelashes are still in perfect, healthy condition. Our glues do not contain formaldehyde, so our products are safe for each client. Always ask your lash expert if their glue contains formaldehyde before going for your appointment.
tFS: Any advice for someone who is trying eyelash extensions for the first time?
Yuki DelliPaoli: I highly recommend coming in for a trial set first (only 25 extensions on each eye) at least 4 weeks before your event to see how comfortable you are with the look. I always say it's better to start out with a half set (50 to 60 percent of your top lashes) if you aren't sure, and if this is your first time. It’s easier to add more than to remove lashes!
tFS: What are the best tricks to maintaining lash extensions?
YP: Try to avoid any water around your eyes during the first 48 hours. If you need to wash your face during this time, try a face wipe. Only use eye makeup that is easy to clean with mild oil-free cleanser.
CA: Brush them! Use a bit of baby oil (if you are using a glue that is oil-friendly like the Novalash platinum bond that we use), and put some on a lash brush to brush them so they keep in shape.
