If its one designer that I had to be partial, well more like biased to at Fashion Week, would no doubt be Betsey Johnson. If its not her quirkiness and eccentric style herself, her signature hot pink lips and lightning bolts, disco ball colors and of course, her famous runway cartwheels and dancing, then I don't know WHAT is! Once again she demonstrated her uniqueness at the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion week. A long sequins dress paired up with funky Doc Marten looking boots and an exaggerated bubble dress were a few items presented on the runway. She clearly didn't shy away from eclectic colors and vibrancy. That's not a la Betsey. She embraces what people might find outrageous and turns it into pure art. What I love the most about her is her genuineness and ice-breaking personality. She reflects that through her work and has single-handedly given women the opportunity to exude that kind of confidence as well. Being a philanthropist for breast cancer and a survivor herself, there's nothing she appreciates more than life and fashion. And it shows. She's been designing for well over forty years strong now and in order to do so, you must stay current with the times. Nightlife influences, cultures, themes and personal idols all project through her art of designing accessories, handbags, shoes and clothing. Another key to her success may well be the price. Not everybody is fortunate enough to afford a piece of garment the price of someone's car! For instance, that long sequins dress would probably retail between 300$ and 500$ Canadian. But if you think THAT'S crazy then you haven't been doing your homework on Haute Couture, where garments like that retail for 3 times that price! So I, for one, am grateful for Betsey Johnson and what she has contributed in the world of fashion for ever woman. With just celebrating her 69th birthday a little over a month ago, taking a cruise with the rest of the retirees seems out of the question. Once again, that's not a la Betsey. We should all emulate some part of her in our daily lives and live free. It is safe to say that she is a fair definition of what it is to be forever young.
