Style Showdown: Who Dominates When Anne Hathaway and Rooney Mara do Dominatrix Looks?

Sometimes stars get it right, and sometimes they need another celeb to step in and show ‘em how it’s done. This week in Style Showdown, just when it seems like Anne Hathaway can do no wrong, she, well…does. Plus, see what happens when a male enters the ring for possibly the first time.

Trend #1: Bondage

Miss: You didn’t think this was going to be another post gushing about how gorgeous Hathaway has been looking ever since the magazines published pics of her fairytale wedding, did you? Thankfully, just when I was growing just jealous enough to call it a crush, she finally gave me something to pick at. I would’ve loved if the actress had taken her uniquely constructed Tom Ford gown at the Les Miserables New York premiere and styled it in the glamorous Sixties way that the designer did. Instead, she went goth with over-the-knee bondage boots that look a little too much like fancy knee braces. Plus, they’re so un-Anne that it makes me as uncomfortable to look at her wearing them as she must feel doing so (which this pose pretty much confirms). She should keep radiating elegance like she has been and leave the goth looks to Rooney Mara.

Hit: Because if there’s any actress who can do the bondage look, it’s Mara. (Did you think I was going to say Miley Cyrus? Think again.) At the Dubai International Film Festival, she smoldered in a custom-made Calvin Klein with a sheer bodice and just-dominatrix-enough details at the bust and waistband. Both actresses wore slicked hair and vampy makeup which both, I’ll admit, pulled off stunningly.

Miss: At the X Factor finals in London, Nicole Scherzinger struck a pose in a cape that said, “Beam me up!” I’m all for creative outerwear (if I see another somber peacoat I might, I don’t know, snore) but the Pussycat Dolls’ tile-textured black leather and red cape looks like it came straight out of the Star Trek costume closet.

Hit: OK, so we can’t give Anne Hathway a miss without drawing attention to her many recent red carpet hits. Not all capes bring to mind the sci-fi characters who popularized them, as Anne Hathaway proved at the Les Miserablse after party in London. She recycled the midnight blue Burberry Prorsum cape coat which she wore over her gown earlier on the premiere red carpet, pairing it perfectly with an Altuzarra dress and coordinating navy pumps for a luxe evening look.

Miss: We all heard about Justin Bieber wearing overalls to meet the Canadian Prime Minister and then tweeting gleefully about it…

Hit: …but I didn’t want the Biebs to ruin overalls for everyone else. Diane Kruger looked like a pin-up in a Jason Wu navy blue brocade pair at the Jaeger-LeCoultre Place Vendome boutique opening. She completed the sexy look with sky-high pumps and a classic victory roll hairdo.
