Sure the clothes look pretty similar to every other Lover collection. There is enough creamy lace and delicate broderie anglaise to outfit an entire 19th Century township, and prim collared blouses come pointy, lacey, layered and even popped. But the context of Altman’s 1977 cult classic adds a surrealist touch: these are clothes you could wear to a boozy summer barbeque, but the collection would also be a suitable choice if you were a pregnant hippy artist lounging on the floor of an empty Palm Springs swimming pool painting reptilian humanoid figures on the dusty tiles.
As it happens the curtainesque floral pattern cropping up on the puffiest of puffy-sleeve blouses was inspired by these crazy murals Willie paints in the film. Other fresh touches in ‘Persona’ include the introduction of new colours like coral and a brownish beige, and last season’s metallic hues are carried through onto bronze pleated skirts. Also, bomber jackets! Don’t know how prevalent these were in 1970s Palm Springs, but they’re a welcome addition here jazzed up with prim collars and needlework.
‘Persona’ will be dropping in stores from August through November.
