Easy Wedding Hair How

There's nothing like a wedding to get you to finally try something new and fun with your hair-and with the official 2014 wedding season just around the corner, it's time for us to get down to gathering hair inspiration! So last weekend, my sister-in-law Jessica and I tried out two cute wedding hairstyle ideas just for you, with help from hairstylist Tonya Cuozzo at Zion Hair Salon, a hidden gem in Madison, New Jersey (near where I live). hairstyles-diy-1-w724.jpg" width="100%"/>

I'll share Jess's awesome tribal rope-braid updo how-to with you next week. First, here's a step-by-step that'll let you DIY the chic little crisscross knot Tonya did on me. The best part? It works even if you have a bob (my hair has grown out to shoulder-length). hairstyles-diy-2-w724.jpg" width="100%"/>

1. Bump up your crown. Using a teasing comb with a tail, gather sections across the crown of your head, being sure to grab hair from both sides of your part each time, so your bump won't split in the middle. Start to back-comb small sections (a.k.a. tease), working from the front of your head throughout the crown section. hairstyles-diy-5216-w540.jpg" width="100%"/>

Teasing Tip: When identifying where to tease, think of this section literally as a crown that sits on the back of your head. How to know if you're teasing enough? "The hair should stand up on its own but still be soft-you are creating a 'cushion' of hair, not a nest," Tonya says. "Use short, slow strokes. It doesn't have to be aggressive."

2. Make a low pony. Gather the top section of your hair into a low ponytail, pushing to enhance the bump up top. Secure with a tiny tug-free hair elastic. Leave a small section free in the front on each side so you can braid them later. hairstyles-diy-5236-w724.jpg" width="100%"/>

3. Wrap the ends around. Take the hair from underneath the pony on one side and wrap around the ponytail. Secure with a couple bobby pins. Repeat on the other side, looping the hair up and around the hair swoop you've already pinned (see photos). The result: a sleek crisscrossed effect. hairstyles-diy-5258-w724.jpg" width="100%"/>

4. Tuck the ends. Roll and tuck the remaining loose ends into the bun, pinning in place. If your hair's bob-length, you'll do less roll, more tuck and pin. hairstyles-diy-5407-w724.jpg" width="100%"/>

Hairpin Tip: With an updo like this, it's helpful to use a combination of pins-bobby pins to hold things strongly in place and U-shaped hairpins to help shape the hairstyle as you go. hairstyles-diy-5673-w724.jpg" width="100%"/>

5. Add accent braids. Grab one of your loose front sections and start braiding. Secure the braid at the end with another tiny elastic, so it doesn't gradually unravel. Slip a hairpin through the braid and insert into your updo, securing so the elastic is hidden. Repeat on the other side. Tip: Make the braids tight, then gently tug on them section-by-section, if you want them to look wider once they're in.

6. Finish with wisps. Leave any baby hairs around your ears free, for a soft and romantic look-this hairstyle shouldn't look too perfect.

Wisp Tip: To create more softness and wisps, gently rub a scarf over your hair to loosen random strands in a natural way.

This turned out to be one of my favorite wedding hairstyles ever-and I say that as someone who's been a bridesmaid about 32 times. (OK, exaggerating slightly.)Got any questions about how to do this hairstyle idea at home? Ask away and we'll answer!
