See the Detail on the Braid Blake Lively Wore at Cannes That Everyone Is Dying ...

The entire beauty world lost its head yesterday when Blake Lively stepped on to the 2014 Cannes Film Festival opening red carpet with a simple braided ponytail hairstyle. What's so special about it, you ask?

Well, honestly nothing. It's just a long messy braid. But somehow all the elements-just how high it was on her head, the exact amount of messiness that kept it from looking too young for her, the strategic unevenness of the plaiting work-came together to create something epic. I really feel it has a lot to do with the fact that it's purposely not perfect. There's a very calculated bit of quirkiness there. And it's stunning. Truly.

Now you see why everyone freaked out over it.

So far as we're concerned, the words 'bad hair day' aren't ones that feature in Harry Styles' vocabulary. If we had hair like that, we'd be playing with it, too. (Photo: WENN)

And now that the 20-year-old's 'do has had a bit of a re-style, we're even more certain of this fact. Harry's new 'do. (Photo: Instagram / Lou Teasdale)

Jennifer Lawrence's 'Do Will Surprise You

It's a happy Monday, indeed. After showcasing a super-chic baby bob a few weeks ago, Jennifer Lawrence has debuted yet another rad hairstyle for the premiere of X-Men: Days of Future Past. This is basically the coolest transitional 'do we've seen in a while: It's pulled back on one side in what appears to be a French twist, but then the right side is left loose in all of its cheekbone-hugging glory.

Truth be told, we haven't seen short-hair innovation like this since the master of the baby bob herself, Michelle Williams, unleashed her own version of this sneaky, asymmetrical hairstyle on the carpet. One of the many reasons we love J Lawr's style is that, like Williams' 'do, there is the illusion of a half-shave, which gives her bob an entirely fresh look and a huge dose of edginess without requiring her to go under the clippers. (Of course, we fully applaud those who do go for the buzz - major props, Kelly Osbourne.) To fully appreciate the genius of this hair, though, you must see it from the other side. Click through to scope out the yin to the loose side's yang...

Photo: Erik Pendzich/REX USA.

As you can see, the Academy Award-winning actress' stylist created a deep side-part, swept her length to the right, and then pulled all of the hair on the left side straight back into a sharp, sleek twist. The result? An unexpected, evening-perfect 'do that breathes new life into her jaw-length cut. Paired with a purple smoky eye and soft-plum lips, the overall beauty look is darkly romantic and really, really pretty.

Lawrence has proven once again that she can make any hair length versatile. Of course, we'll be waiting to see what this short-hair maestro whips up next. Like this post? There's more. Get tons of beauty tips, tutorials, and news on the Refinery29 Beauty Facebook page!

Army hairstyle regulations could be trimmed over race concerns

Chuck Hagel has ordered a review of the new army rules. Photograph: Brian Kersey/Getty Images

US lawmakers are working to block the army's new hairstyle standards from being enforced, following criticism that the rules are racially biased.

The House armed services committee on Wednesday added language to the annual defense authorization bill that would require a review of the new rules and prohibit the army from imposing the regulations.

The updated version of the army's uniform guide, army regulation 670-1, bars multiple braids larger than a quarter of an inch in diameter, and twists and dreadlocks of any style.

Defense secretary Chuck Hagel ordered a review of the rules last week, after the 16 women of the Congressional Black Caucus asked him to overturn the rules, which they consider to be discriminatory and written in an offensive way.

'Though we understand the intent of the updated regulation is to ensure uniformity in our military, it is seen as discriminatory rules targeting soldiers who are women of color with little regard to what is needed to maintain their natural hair,' the caucus said in a 10 April letter to Hagel.

The group specifically took issue with the army's use of the words 'unkempt' and 'matted' to refer to hairstyles frequently used by black women. Hagel said the review would include the removal of any language in the regulation deemed offensive.

Black women make up a third of the army's active-duty female forces, with more than 26,700 on active duty. The new standards bar such women from employing easy to maintain and inexpensive hairstyle options available to black women.

According to the House committee's proposed change, the defense department must deliver the results of the review to Congress and will include 'the opinions of those who may have religious accommodation requirements and minorities serving in the armed forces'.

The army said the regulation promotes uniformity and that the determinations were made with the assistance of a focus group that included black women.

The committee's move to block the rules must be agreed on by the senate before it could be adopted into law. The Senate armed services committee is set to deliver their draft of the authorization bill later this month.

Another Cute Hairstyle Idea for Short Hair? Thanks For Doing Us a Solid ...

With the short hair trend still raging, we're always looking for new cute ways for your cropped- haired ladies to mix things up-and this style Julianne Hough wore over the weekend to the Open Hearts Foundation 4th Annual Gala would do that very nicely.

It's quite simple, really. A few locks of her hair in the front were twisted and pinned back into interesting, non-identifyable shapes. The secret to pinning like this? Sliding them in vertically, as you can see our hair guru Theodore Leaf do here in this video. Watch and learn:

Congresswomen upbraid Army for unfair hairstyle regulations: Mitchell

By MARY MITCHELL

Updated:

With time running out on a petition seeking a revision on Army regulations that ban certain ethnic hairstyles, the petition's creator, Sgt. Jasmine Jacobs of the Georgia Army National Guard, has gotten some influential support from members of Congress.

As of Friday, 17,440 people had signed the petition at the "We The People" White House website, but that's far short of 100,000 signatures needed by midnight Sunday for Jacobs to get an official response from President Barack Obama's administration.

Last week, 16 women of the Congressional Black Caucus sent a letter to Secretary of Defense Charles Hagel, encouraging him to "reconsider" the updated regulation that bans braids, dreadlocks, and twists.

"[T]he use of words like 'unkempt' and 'matted' when referring to traditional hairstyles worn by women of color are offensive and biased," the letter said in part.

"The assumption that individuals wearing these hairstyles cannot maintain them in a way that meets the professionalism of Army standards indicates a lack of cultural sensitivity conducive to creating a tolerant environment for minorities," the congresswomen said.

Freshman congresswoman Robin Kelly (D-Ill.) joined long-time powerhouses Reps. Maxine Waters (D-Ca.) and Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), in signing the letter.

"I respect that the military wants uniformity, but to go so far as to stipulate the exact width of a braid is taking it too far. My hope is that the Army will reevaluate this regulation with more sensitivity to the traditional hairstyles worn by women of color," Kelly said in an email response about the letter.

So far, there's been no public response from Hagel.

"It would be inappropriate for me to comment on the secretary's correspondence; he responds directly to correspondence received," Joy Crabaugh, a Pentagon spokesman, said in an email.

Jacobs has not heard from Army officials even though Time, USA Today, NPR, MSNBC, and News One have interviewed her on the hair controversy.

Still, she is optimistic that something will be done to overturn a regulation that she says strips African-American female soldiers of options to wear their hair in a "healthy" manner, while keeping it in its "natural" state.

"My hope, of course, is that the regulations will be revised and [the Army] will consider women of color and figure out a way for them to stay in the military and wear their natural hair in a professional manner," Jacobs told me in a telephone interview on Thursday.

"I honestly think we are going to get something close to that. When Congress starts asking the secretary of defense to look at these regulations, that will result in action."

Jacobs said other congressmen, including her own, Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), have indicated they would send a letter to the secretary of defense, as well.

Meanwhile, although Jacobs is getting support from some members of Congress, she also is hearing from critics who accuse her of asking for special treatment.

"It's always interesting to hear that," she told me. "When I joined the military, I wore my hair in twists and six years later these rules change. White females can wear their hair as it naturally is. We want to be able to wear our hair professionally as it naturally is, the way other females are able to wear their natural hair."

Although straight hair, weaves and wigs remain popular, more black women choose to wear natural hairstyles to either avoid damaging healthy hair, or because they are trying to restore hair damaged by chemical relaxers.

The Army's 670-1 grooming regulation is an embarrassing misstep when it comes to African-American women. Officials might as well admit it and move on.

London salon mocks Kim Jong Un's 'bad hair', N.Korea not amused

North Korea failed to see the joke when a London hair salon used a picture of its leader Kim Jong Un to try to attract more customers.

M&M Hair Academy, a hair salon in west London, put up a giant poster of the North Korean leader in its window after its owners read unconfirmed media reports that men in the reclusive Asian state had been ordered to have the same hairdo.

The promotional poster read: "Bad Hair Day? 15% off all gent cuts through the month of April."

With its shaved sides and bowl-like shape, Kim Jong Un's distinctive haircut has been a light-hearted talking point for North Korea watchers.

But officials at the country's embassy, which is just a short walk away from the salon, visited to complain and wrote to the Foreign Office asking it to take "necessary action" to stop "the provocation," a British diplomatic source said, adding that the Foreign Office was considering its response.

The embassy, located in a semi-detached house near the hair salon, filed a complaint to the police too.

A spokeswoman for London's Metropolitan police said on Wednesday that the complaint had been investigated and that no action would be taken. "We spoke to all parties involved and there were no offences," she said.

Officials at the embassy could not immediately be contacted for comment. Amusing but sinister

David Burrowes, a lawmaker from Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative party who specialises in North Korean issues, said the incident was amusing but sinister.

"On the one hand their response is laughable," he told London's Evening Standard newspaper. "But underlying it is a more sinister undertone which is played out in North Korea with people being locked up, killed and denied freedoms."

Last month, Radio Free Asia reported that Kim had issued a mandatory directive requiring university students in North Korea to sport his hairstyle or else. Although the news item was eventually revealed to be false, hair in North Korea is a matter of ideological concern.

Want China Times published a story last year claiming that North Koreans are recommended to choose from a selection of 28 state-sanctioned hairstyles - 18 for women and 10 for men.

North Korean Officials Target Hair Salon Over Kim Jong

Image: Uncredited/Associated Press

Apparently not all publicity is good publicity in the eyes of North Korea - especially when it comes to state-mandated haircuts.

A London hair salon was targeted last week by alleged North Korean embassy officials over an unflattering advertisement that features the country's leader Kim Jong-un and his infamous 'do, according to multiple reports.

The ad promoted a 15% discount on haircuts at the M&M Hair Academy throughout April, and aimed to be a clever way to bolster sales. It included a smiling photo of Kim, with the words "Bad hair day?" emblazoned across his chest. The ad went up on April 9, the BBC reported.

Unfortunately for the salon, however, the North Korean embassy is only a mile away.

Image: Kirsty Wigglesworth/Associated Press

Two men showed up, and began taking pictures and writing notes the day after the ad went up, the The Guardian reported. They then entered the salon, and asked who was responsible for the ad, reportedly claiming that it was disrespectful and had to come down.

"I told them this is England and not North Korea and told them to get their lawyers," Mo Nabbach, M&M's manager, told the London Evening Standard. "The two guys were wearing suits and they were very serious. It was very threatening."

Nabbach said he took the ad down, but was encouraged by clients to put it back up in the window. He eventually contacted local police after asking the men to leave. They did not specifically say where they worked, but a Metropolitan Police Service spokesperson told The Guardian that officers had been in contact with the North Korean embassy.

On Monday, the North Korean embassy sent a letter to the UK's Foreign Office, complaining about the ad, according to the Evening Standard. The letter demanded that the Foreign Office take "necessary action to stop the provocation."

Kim's government allegedly mandated last month that all male university students are now required to sport the block-like hairdo, although the Associated Press reported that visitors to North Korea have not noticed a change in hairstyle choice.

The North Korean embassy did not immediately respond to Mashable's request for comment. With files from Anita LiHave something to add to this story? Share it in the comments.

3 Wedding Hairstyle Ideas (With How

Spring 2015 Bridal Market is in full swing, and you know what that means-OK, a lot of jaw-dropping new wedding dresses, but also fresh inspiration when it comes to wedding hairstyle ideas. Here are a few of the pretty styles we've seen during designers' presentations, with backstage details on how you can try the looks for yourself (or have your stylist do it during your hair trial!). hairstyle-ideas-monique-lhuillier-spring-2015-w540.jpg" width="100%"/>

Classic chignons at Monique Lhuillier, by Nina Dimachki for Kerastase

The how-to:

1. Apply a quarter size of Ciment Thermique to clean, dry hair, from mid-length to the ends. Then layer with a generous amount of Spray-a-Porter, applying in sections for even distribution. Blow dry with a bristle finishing brush, pulling hair away from the face

2. Spray a light veil of Powder Bluff onto the hair to create a dry, matte effect. Gather hair into a ponytail at the nape of the neck, securing with a bungee hair elastic. Spray the ponytail with additional Powder Bluff to enhance the matte effect

3. Twist the ponytail to compact the hair while twirling it into a classic chignon. Pin in place while making sure no ends are popping out. Spray with Laque Dentelle to finish. hairstyle-ideas-jenny-packham-spring-2015-w540.jpg" width="100%"/>

Voluminous ponytails at Jenny Packham, by Jeanie Syfu for Tresemme

The how-to:

1. Apply Tresemme 24 Hour Body Foaming Mousse liberally to all sections of the hair, then rough dry.

2. Brush out the hair with a Mason Pearson brush to work the product in and apply clip-in hair extensions from the nape of the neck to just above the ear, as needed.

3. Tease hair in small sections and lightly spray with Tresemme 24 Hour Body Finishing Spray.

4. With your fingers, gather hair at the nape of the neck and secure with an elastic.

5. Take a small strand of hair from underneath the ponytail and wrap around the base to cover the elastic and pin into place.

6. Loosen the ponytail just behind the ears at the nape to create a round shape. Gently pull a few wisps of hair from the ponytail to frame the face and fluff the hair lightly with fingers.

7. Finish with Tresemme 24 Hour Body Finishing Spray for long-lasting volume. hairstyle-ideas-marchesa-spring-2015-w540.jpg" width="100%"/>

Knotty updos at Marchesa, by Akemi Tamaribuchi for Kerastase

The how-to:

1. Apply a quarter size dab of Ciment Thermique to clean, dry hair. Then layer on a generous amount of Mousse Bouffante and Spray-a-Porter, working in sections for even distribution.

2. Beginning at the crown, lift and twist two-inch sections and blow dry upward to create volume and texture. Work around the head and clip each section up to cool and set.

3. Use a small round brush to refine hair around the temple area and/or baby hairs around the hairline. Spray a generous amount of Powder Bluff to tame these strands.

4. Divide hair into four segments: left/right sides, crown (top) and back (nape of neck). For the back section, create an "S" shape underhand braid to cover the section, braiding two inches away from the scalp to create looseness. Pin the lengths of the braid into the design for hold.

5. Drop sides and crown/top portions to find the natural parting. Beginning on the less dense side, create a knot with the section just behind the temple. Pin the knot loosely into place before creating another knot along the section. Continue to pin knots, placing them above the braid. Do the same for the heavier side of part, making sure to look for balance and softness.

6. Allow small hairs around the temple and hairline to drop, adding softness to the design. Finish with Laque Dentelle hairspray. Which of these wedding hairstyle ideas from Spring 2015 Bridal Market do you like the most? Photos: Courtesy Kerastase, Tresemme

Kim's hairstyle is no laughing matter

Related Stories

London - North Korea has written an official letter of complaint to Britain over a London hair salon's advert implying that Kim Jong-un has a bad hairstyle, the Foreign Office confirmed on Thursday.

The Stalinist state has failed to see the funny side of a discount haircuts advert featuring Kim at the M&M Hair Academy in Ealing, west London.

The poster featured a large picture of Kim with his distinctive short-back-and-sides hairdo and the slogan: "Bad hair day? 15 percent off all gent cuts through the month of April."

British police intervened after North Korean embassy officials paid a visit to the salon and told hairdresser Mo Nabbach to take down the "disrespectful" poster from the window.

Besides turning up in person, the North Korean embassy in London has also written to the Foreign Office demanding action.

The embassy is a suburban detached house in Ealing, a kilometre away from the salon.

London is considering its formal response.

A Foreign Office spokesman told AFP: "We have received a letter from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea embassy and will respond in due course."

The poster had been taken down by Wednesday. - AFP

Take Our Poll Emma Stone's Picture Perfect Hair - Exclusive 'How To'

Butterfly Studio Salon stylist Dana Tizzio exclusively shared with HollywoodLife.com how you can achieve this look for yourself:

"To achieve a look like Emma's, try sleeping with 1 or 2 loose braids to get that beachy, natural wave effect in your hair. You don't want your curls to look overdone. You can work with towel dried hair (to preserve your texture) or dry hair from the day of. Use a leave-in conditioner to make sure the look of the hair stays polished. In the morning, take out bedtime braids and gently shake out. Section out the part of your hair in the front, where you would like to wear a braid. How thick or thin is up to you.

With your hair section you will be creating a French braid. A good tip is to start your braid as close to the forehead as possible to get that crown effect and bring all sections of French braid to the forehead. Continue braiding, stopping where desired, and use bobby pin to secure.

For the rest, perfect your effortless waves with a 1 inch curling wand (no-clip). Take random sections of hair here and there and twist, letting hair go quickly. Don't wait for the curl to form around too long so that you can create those loose, flowy waves that aren't over bouncy. To finish the style, apply a texturizing spray like Oribe's Après Beach to boost waves, help with control, and give them lasting shine for a sexy, undone final look."

We love that Emma went with this look!
