Style Icon: Isabel Lucas

She’s hooked up with Jake Gyllenhaal, Adrian Grenier, Shia LaBeouf, and Angus Stone, so under normal circumstances there should be a far greater number of 20-something females who hate Isabel Lucas than there are who admire her. But the former Home and Away star isn’t your average gorgeous, effortlessly stylish movie star with a long string of equally gorgeous boyfriends.

In fact, most of her southern hemisphere followers are probably not all that interested in Lucas’ love life because they’re too busy being obsessed with the contents of her wardrobe. When she wasn’t playing an antisocial troublemaker on Australia’s favourite soap opera, Lucas was making headlines for roaming the streets of Sydney and Los Angeles in fedoras, satchels, 60s dresses and other items that would almost always be accompanied by cringe-inducing fash-tags such as “boho chic.” But her style is probably better described simply as “relaxed” or “natural” rather than anything that suggests she’s trying to channel Sienna Miller circa 2004.

The guts of Isabel’s style is that she never shows an excess of skin and appears to be genuinely uninterested in following trends. She’s been wearing lace, long skirts, and leather sandals for over five years, and eschews “fashion” for an appreciation of individual vintage pieces, beautiful colours or the way that things are woven.

But that’s not to say she’s completely clueless about fashion. The actress counts local designer Collette Dinnigan, known for her feminine dresses, delicate lace, and intricate embellishments, as being amongst her favourites, along with more modest options such as surf label Tigerlily and eco-friendly designer Hannah MacLeod (Isabel earns her flower child cred not just through fashion but by being a dedicated environmental and animal rights activist). Last year she travelled to the Kalahari desert to be swathed in tribal resort motifs and wild meerkats for a colourful Australian Vogue shoot.

And when it’s a special occasion like the Los Angeles premiere of Hollywood blockbuster Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, in which she starred alongside veritable babe Shia LeBeouf, she still manages to look like someone you’d want to be friends with for purely irreproachable reasons in vintage chiffon embroidered Chanel Haute Couture and blinding Dior jewellery.

Isabel Lucas' next cinematic appearance will be in Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups alongside Natalie Portman and Christian Bale. Expect blinged-out headpieces to see a red carpet resurgence come 2013.
