Gone are the days of boring Halloween costumes: nurses, cops, and librarians. “Even if you ‘sexy’ them up, they’re never going to win you that grand prize at a contest,” says celeb makeup artist Julia Papworth. “Channel Effie Trinket (my favorite!) instead from The Hunger Games with these tips.”

Step 1: First, start with basic skincare. “I love Embryoliss Lait-Crème Concentre for moisturizer, followed by Dermalogica Skin Perfect Primer to build a good base for makeup,” notes Julia. Remember to use eye shadow primer as well, she advises, since you want your look to last all night.

Step 2: When rocking elaborate eye shadow like Effie, Julia suggests doing your eyes before your face. “This way, if any loose powder drops down, it’s easy to clean up.” Try a bright pink or green shadow, and sweep it from your outer lash line all the way up to just below your brow. Blend in the bold color with a softer hue in the same color family, and use the softer hue to dust shadow underneath your lower lash line. You want your eyes to look bright, not resemble a clown.

Step 3: Because Effie wore extremely intricate eyelashes, it’s best to pick up some falsies (MAC sells some really fun ones depending on how courageous you want to be), and apply with DUO adhesive.

Step 4: After you finish your eyes, move onto your face. “Effie’s skin was porcelain pale, so the foundation shade you use should really depend on your own skin tone,” explains Julia. Again, you don’t want to look like you painted a clown face on, so choose a shade that’s 2-3 shades lighter than what you would normally wear. Keep in mind: blending is key. And don’t forget your neck!

Step 5: Mrs. Trinket’s eyebrows were bleached out for the film, says Julia. While this is quite a commitment, you can easily cover them up with the light foundation you chose for your skin. Just make sure to conceal every hair. Then dust some Makeup Forever HD Powder all over to combat shine.

Step 6: For blush, choose a bright shade with a pink or purple base, like MAC’s Breath of Plum or Frankly Scarlet.

Step 7: Finally, Effie only wore color on a portion of her mouth, so Julia recommends lining the middle of your lips with a neon pink or blue color. “Dab a complementary color, like green or gold, in the center, stick on a blush colored wig and an over-the-top flower accessory for your hair, and you’re ready to roll!”
