Sometimes it seems that pop stars like Rihanna and Katy Perry get all the love when it comes to red carpet style, but Annie Clark (AKA St. Vincent), Sia Furler, and Feist are three lady rockers who deserve attention. You may not know their names or faces as well their chart-topping counterparts, but you’re sure to have nodded your head to at least one of their tunes—and now you’ll want to steal their style. Take a note from the personal style of these three musicians who prove that Florence Welch isn’t the only indie chick with taste.

“Indie” is short for independent, and a fresh, original, and individual vibe is what sets these artists’ style apart. You probably know Annie Clark better as St. Vincent, the name she uses when recording her orchestral solo songs and collaborating with artists like Bon Iver, Kid Cudi, and Sufjan Stevens. With fair skin, a mop of dark brown corkscrew curls, and strong eyebrows, Clark’s a classic beauty—she plays this element up with understated, feminine and vintage-inspired fashion. At the premiere of the second season of Portlandia, Clark wore a timeless white satin shift dress but added a tough element with a knotted black leather belt tied in a loop around the waist.
It may not be long before we can no longer classify Sia Furler in the “indie” category: though the Australian artist released her own eclectic albums for more than a decade, her songs Titanium with David Guetta and Wild Ones with Flo Rida are billboard hits. Sia was a fixture at NYFW this year, taking in the J. Mendel and Christian Siriano exhibitions. Her quirky sense of style, characterized by her blunt platinum haircut, pulls together statement pieces in Crayola colors and unexpected shapes. Backstage at the Siriano show, she wore a white blouse with an oversized origami-like bib, and every hard-rocking lady’s staple, black cigarette jeans. Her coated pair—this season’s most of-the-moment texture—was accented with mint green bow heels, adding a touch Sia’s signature style.
Feist, whose toned-down tunes have drawn enough attention to get her featured in both Sesame Street and one of those colorful early iPod commercials, should get more recognition for her personal style. This bohemian beauty could be characterized as a blend of Charlotte Gainsbourg’s clean and chic look, Patti Smith’s borrowed-from-the-boys cool, and her own Victorian-meets-love-child sense of style. She often appears in waifish dresses with tribal-inspired jewelry and perfectly unstyled hair. At the Focus for Change benefit in NYC, Feist wore a coral maxi skirt with a tie waist, wine-colored tank, a beaded necklace and a metallic embroidered scarf—relaxed pieces that make it so easy to add an artistic touch to your wardrobe that you’ll be singing.
