Unexpected Winter Trend: Floral Headgear
Just when you thought knit beanies and earmuffs would be cropping up on celebrity heads, a trend that’s decidedly more springy is blooming. It all started in the front row at Anna Sui in September, when trendsetter Alexa Chung topped off her floral dress and navy blue coat ensemble with a crown of pink and white buds (fellow front row fashionistas Sarah Sophia Flicker, Tenneessee Thomas, and Alia Penner also joined in with their own hippy headgear).

It seemed like one of those Fashion Week trends that would hibernate all winter but, alas, just like celebs manage to survive in bandage dresses and strappy heels when us normals are going around in peacoats and boots, flowered headbands are already showing up on the red carpet. Australian star Delta Goodrem wore a crown of pale pink petals with her raspberry Dior dress at the Melbourne Cup this past week. Admittedly, it’s almost summer in the Southern hemisphere, but Pixie Lott had no geographical excuse when she contrasted her black off-the-shoulder Dolce & Gabbana dress with a yellow floral headpiece at the WGSN Global Fashion Awards in London. Fashion editor for The Sun-Herald Kate Waterhouse is known for rocking pretty fancy fascinators, and she didn’t disappoint at the VRC Oaks Club Luncheon. Her avant-garde Ellery shift with outsized sleeves matched her merlot flowered headpiece. Elle Fanning tried a more approachable gold and rosette headband at a recent Ginger and Rosa screening. Not to be outdone, Lady Gaga set the standard for the flowered crown trend at Phillip Treacy during London Fashion Week, where she looked like a sartorial embodiment of seasonal allergies.
