At an age most people are navigating one mistake at a time, Talia Shuvalov is weaving together a reputation as one of the most exciting young designers on the scene. She trained at Sydney’s University of Technology before sojourning in London to intern for Alexander McQueen, and was shortly after seized by the discerning hand of Narciso Rodriguez to become his Senior Knitwear Designer in New York.
While in London, Shuvalov attended Parsons, where her Spring 2013 graduate collection was sent down the runway as part of the prophetic “First Eighteen” show. That collection makes it easy to see why she was so instantly appetizing to Rodriquez. Shuvalov’s structured knitwear demands your attention with powerful shapes and methodical splashes of stark hospital green and yellow, making plain grey marle into something that demands to be stared at.
There are hints of things one might be tempted to call Navajo, but modern materials, blown-up shapes and a sterile colour palette (emphasised to great effect in the Cara Stricker-lensed campaign) allow Shuvalov to eschew cringey cultural appropriation. ASOS and Urban Outfitters, take note.
Talia Shuvalov might now be based in New York, but we’re just going to go ahead and claim her as our own.
