Shop This Smokin Celebrity Trend: Smoking Slippers

Bored of ballet flats? Fall’s new wear-with-everything shoe is the smoking slipper, and celebs like Alexa Chung, Brooklyn Decker, and Jade Williams are proof that this trend is heating up. No longer just for dandies like Hugh Hefner, the smoking slipper—which comes in everything from monogrammed velvet to sparkling sequins—has been embraced by stylistas. Check out how celebs are wearing them as a alternative to pumps with skirts and dresses, or putting on a pair to add a refined touch to jeans.

A combination of a ballet flat and a loafer, the smoking slipper’s classic details instantly refine any outfit. During Fall Fashion Week in London, Jade Williams was one of the well-heeled fashionistas spotted outside of the Topshop exhibition wearing a pair of black patent Gucci slippers. This borrowed-from-the-boys touch tones down the femininity of her salmon-colored tweet Topshop suit and pink chiffon blouse.

Alexa Chung adores her embroidered velvet smoking slippers, evoking the men’s monogrammed slippers that started the trend. She’s worn her kitty-shaped pair by Charlotte Olympia to countless high-fashion events, but was seen hitting the streets during London Fashion Week last week in a more classic velvet pair by Penelope Chivers which were embellished with embroidered palm trees. While skinny jeans aren’t exactly typical front row fashion, Chung’s chic look is pulled together by details like her footwear, clutch, and cat-eye glasses.

At the 24 Hours Plays benefit in Los Angeles, Brooklyn Decker wore a pair that’s fast becoming a celeb favorite. Her Tory Burch smoking slippers—which feature a super-cool fox face—have also been seen on the famous feet of Carey Mulligan and Jordana Brewster. The statement shoes definitely add interest to the actress’ otherwise basic look.
