What to Wear Now According to HBC Fashion Director Suzanne Timmins

Last night a select group of fashionistas gathered on the third floor of The Bay to heed the style gospel of Suzanne Timmins, HBC's Fashion Director. In her charismatic way, Timmins took us through the must-have fall trends and offered her choice picks for the coming months.

Yes, it is a bit late in the season to be discussing Fall 2012 trends, but nonetheless, the evening gave a valuable insight into what to wear now. Some of the key trends presented by Timmins were: Rich Colour, Statement Prints, Luxurious Texture, Black and Bright, and Baroque Nouveau.

Rich Colour is all about wearing color-on-colour, but by that we don't mean colour blocking. This season is all about wearing one colour on top of the same, but in a slightly different hue. Bottle greens, violets, and deep reds are the hot shades to wear from head to toe.

Statement Prints have become de rigueur, as has clashing them against one another. To pull off the trend without looking like a clown car crash, Timmins recommends teaming small patterns with larger floral designs.

Luxurious Texture entails a very Lady of the Manor feel. Teaming tweed, with fur, with leather is a must, as is keeping the palette warm with shades of fawn, brown, and burgundy.

Black and Bright is just that: teaming something black with something bright. This is easy to do since everyone has something black to which they can add one staple piece. A neon satchel, bright tights, or a colourful knit perhaps?

Finally, Baroque Nouveau calls for more black, but this time teamed with gold. It's a very festive trend and I can definitely see it becoming a staple look for the office Christmas party. Again, black is the easy part and Timmins merely recommends investing in one gold piece, be it a skirt, dress or jacket. A statement jacket is always a good choice because more often than not, people will only see/photograph you from the waist up. This is what Timmins calls "waisted beauty!"
