Think plaid is only for grungy Kristen Stewart-inspired outfits and trendy guys with beards? Let Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Alba, and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge help you re-think that. This season, plaid is getting a ladylike makeover in pretty cuts and feminine colors.
At the Museum at FIT fall luncheon recognizing Oscar de la Renta, Sarah Jessica Parker honored the designer by wearing his cherry red wrap dress in an oversized gingham print. The dress’ ultra-feminine shape and modern take on a classic print evoked an updated 1950s feel, which SJP balanced with an edgy studded cuff bracelet and a fun pair of polka dot pumps.
Returning to her hotel during NYFW, Jessica Alba turned heads in a plaid A-line skirt from the Ralph Lauren Resort 2013 collection. The skirt was a sunnier version of a standard tartan in a cut that’s much more chic than schoolgirl. Alba toughened up the outfit by wearing a cropped leather jacket on top and black t-strap heels, but her high ponytail kept with the skirt’s retro feel.
Duchess Kate chose a winning look for a pre-Olympics event where she judged a judo match. The Royal’s grey and white plaid Hobbs dress was as ladylike and polished as one would expect from a princess, though it’s a look that any woman could wear to a lunch or even at the office.
