A flowered sundress may be the epitome of warm weather fashion, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t wear florals on into fall and winter. Kylie Minogue, Christa B. Allen, Emeli Sande, and Emma Roberts were all recently spotted in season-appropriate flowered dresses. Copy one of their looks, and you’re sure to stand out from the sea of somber tones that everyone’s moping around in—just think of these flowers as perennials. Kylie Minogue stopped by London’s ITV Studios in a Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2012 dress. Look for florals on a black background and dresses with long sleeves like Minogue’s—its cherub print also bumps up the timeliness factor, incorporating this season’s baroque trend.

One easy way to guarantee that your florals are fall-ready is to stick with roses—they often bloom into winter, and look much less summery than ditsy floral or tropical prints. Christa B. Allen wore a vintage-inspired Ted Baker London dress with a rose graphic in pretty pinks and greens. Her emerald pumps definitely helped to weatherize this look.
Emeli Sande attended the Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Awards in a flowered chiffon dress by Preen. The combination of the dress’s long sleeves, high neckline, and figure-skimming shape (hint: a breezy cut is a surefire way to make you look seasonally-challenged) made it appropriate for fall in addition to its muted tones. Her ankle boots and burgundy lip added to the effect.
Sticking with an autumnal palette is another easy way to wear florals in fall. Emma Roberts almost pushed it with the Stella McCartney Resort 2013 dress she wore to the Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund event (the word resort is a dead giveaway), but the oranges and greens reflect the colors of fall leaves and it’s easy to imagine this dress over a pair of tights and layered with a rust-colored jacket.
