Allison Williams: This Is What a Rising Style Star Looks Like

You know Allison Williams’ character on HBO’s Girls: Marni, the one who always looks put together, like she sacrificed just a bit of her sleep for her makeup routine and spent her subway money on her outfit. But as we’ve seen more and more of Williams on the red carpet, it turns out that the actress’ real-life style doesn’t lack any of Marni’s polish.

Williams' look is elegant, clean, classic, and ladylike (chances are, you haven't even seen her wearing pants). Since she began working with stylist Christina Ehrlich — who also styles Ashley Greene, Amy Adams, and Penelope Cruz to name a few well-dressed stars — she’s honed a sometimes-preppy, Ivy League sense of style… and her four years at Yale probably didn’t hurt. Her fashion choices, which fall somewhere in the middle between risk-tasking and playing it safe, are calculated to suit her timeless and clean-cut image — though she’s still young, there’s nothing of Taylor Momsen or Demi Lovato here.

William’s well-curated look gives off an aura of a girl who knows her designers, as her stylist confirmed in a recent New York Times style profile. “She’s not a girl who just wings it. She is 100 percent involved in everything she chooses. She asks the most articulate questions.” Williams is so involved with her own styling, in fact, that she dressed herself for fashion week. At the Style Awards she wore a white cocktail dress by Christian Siriano with dramatic lips and her hair swept into a ballerina bun. At Fashion’s Night Out she made an appearance at the DVF store in a black-and-pink peplum dress from the designer’s Resort 2013 collection. Williams wore one of her most fashion-forward looks at Peter Som, opting for the designer’s oxblood leather skirt and dolman-sleeve top.

Style blogs loved the green taffeta Oscar de la Renta origami gown that Williams wore to the Emmys, but the actress revealed to WWD that her dress did more than draw raves, but fulfilled her style ambitions as well: “I told [my stylist] when I first met her that my dream — my dream — is to wear Oscar de la Renta. It is one of the only designers I feel like I’ve always known about, and I’ve always noticed.” At the Met Ball she went classic with shape but bold with color in a magenta Ralph Lauren column dress, a color that also worked for her at a pre-Emmy event in lacy Oscar de la Renta.

Her icy blue brocade Antonio Berardi Resort 2013 dress at the BAFTA TV Tea played up her natural beauty, which has been compared to Brooke Shields and Duchess Kate (who she lampooned in a series of College Humor sketches). At the premiere of Girls she went monochrome in a white Donna Karan Pre-Fall 2012 dress accented with an oversized black bow, and her black and blue Victoria Beckham dress at The Late Show With David Letterman showed off her figure.

Look forward to seeing how Marni evolves when Season 2 of Girls premieres in January — and how Williams’ style evolves with all the red carpet appearances that are sure to come with it.
