A Tale of Two Artists: Closed Set with Julie Bensman

From ornate frames in sophisticated Chelsea galleries to graffiti scribbled on downtown facades, art in New York is everywhere. It’s the music drifting up from subways, the jewelry being sold on street corners, and the reason once-questionable neighborhoods like SoHo and Williamsburg are now swarming with socialites and real estate investors.

Elements of design have been infused into every urban nook and cranny, and in many eyes, it’s the city’s artists that make it tick. So why is it so hard to make a buck being one? I’ve met a lot of talented people in this town but have a particular affinity for two: one, my former intern and, two, my cousin. Both are Brooklynites, both are fiercely talented, and both are way cooler than I could ever hope to be. At least I can write about them…

Phillip NuveenAge: 24

Occupation: Visual Artist and Designer

Point of View: Extremely liberal about most things (big surprise); tastefully conservative about certain others. I've been through quite a lot in my young life and understand that quite simply, life is short. I try to stay positive and look for the beauty in others.

Inspired By: It’s as simple as being in a cheerful mood and walking down a favorite street of mine, seeing a fabulous piece of furniture in a storefront… However, I take what I put on canvas very seriously, and the meanings of those pieces of art reflect what’s in my soul.

On Being an Artist in NYC: The main challenge is finding the key to getting exposure. There are many different methods, all of which take 100% devotion. This city truly is unlike any other place. I'm deeply in love.

Style Advice: Keep it simple and always be confident in your style choices.
