7 Compelling Reasons to Cut Your Hair Short

You've spent all that time growing your hair out, you've followed expert advice, and you finally made it to long hair heaven. But you have that itch. Is it time to go short? What's really a good reason? The most convincing one we can think of is because you want to. But here are a few more for good measure: these days every girl from age 20 to 50 seems to have grown her hair out, being different, showing off your individuality and adopting a head-turning style sets you apart. Short hair is sophisticated, plain and simple. Short hair is mature. We don't mean Grandma mature. We mean "I'm a grown-up, I have it together" mature. You'd be surprised how much sexier and attractive that attitude is compared to the woman still not sure what she wants or who she is. Many of our most revered beauty icons had/have short hair (Marilyn, Halle, Audrey, Princess Grace) all the better to admire a stunning face. And finally, you're just tired of dealing with the weight and inconvenience of multiple layers, clogged shower drains, and buying conditioner like it's going out of style.

If any of these thoughts have been running through your mind, here are some of our favorite red carpet darlings who have gone short and (mostly) stayed that way. They're gorgeous and one of their looks might be the perfect one for you. So, bookmark this page, and if you just can't take it anymore, pick a cut to give to your stylist with explicit instructions to make your hair just as beautiful as the inspiration in the photograph.

  • Modern Bob

Cameron Diaz has oscillated between long and short for some time, but she tends to always go back to less length, and we think she looks best that way. Round faces, as well as "baby" faces definitely benefit from the angles of a short cut.

  • Blunt Bob

Emma Bunton looks adorable in this blunt bob. Her hair is on the thin side, which makes it a perfect candidate for a sleek, shorter style.

  • Ultra Short Bob

Carey Mulligan has had several short styles from a choppy boy cut to a full-on shag. But this suits her beautifully. The ultra short bob allows her fresh-faced beauty to shine. The extreme side part balances out the symmetry of those apple cheeks.

No one can argue that Tilda Swinton doesn't have her own style. This androgynous cut is a moderate version of the "Miley" which, trust us, is going to be a nightmare for Billy Ray's daughter to grow out. Tilda's look is more manageable and much more chic.

  • Boy Cut

The Brooklyn ingenue: she dresses vintage, she wouldn't be caught dead in aviators, and she looks smashing in a pea coat. Michelle Williams is the poster child. If you aspire to this ultra hip persona, then, darling, you must try Williams' light blond style.

  • Choppy Pixie

Halle Berry went long for a minute a few years back, and she rightly returned to what has become her signature hairstyle. It's cool, it's wash-and-go, it looks just as appropriate during a grocery run as it does on the red carpet.

Word on the street is that Anne Hathaway was not happy after she had to cut off her hair for a role. But whether or not she likes it, we love the bold move that makes Anne's smile that much more noticeable, and therefore, enviable.
