Style Showdown: Leigh Lezark and Elena Perminova Do Giambattista Geometry and More

Sometimes stars get it right, and sometimes they need another celeb to step in and show ‘em how it’s done. This week our risk-tasking celebs tried on iconic looks, with varying results. From high-fashion (designer from head-to-toe) to low (stockings with a reinforced toe), here’s a look at this week’s celeb hits and misses.

Close Call: When you decide to wear a geometric print suit to an event, spotting someone else in the same look most likely isn’t something you take into consideration—which may be why Leigh Lezark and Elena Perminova looked so stony-faced bumping into one another at the Giambattista Valli exhibition at Paris Fashion Week in equally eye-grabbing suits from the designer’s Fall/Winter 2012 collection. Emma Watson might’ve gotten bashed for wearing pants under a dress recently, but Perminova owns this one—at least her pants and dress unequivocally match. Not only do I just prefer her patten, but compared to Lezark, she styled the look with more ambitious accessories, while Lezark seems to have played it safe as if she wasn’t sure that she could pull off such a statement suit. Whatever my opinion, the looks on these ‘fashion pack’ ladies’ faces say, “She may look ridiculous, but I’m rocking this.”

Miss: Katherine Heigl’s outfit at Variety’s Power of Women event would’ve been simply a snooze if it were just her basic LBD and orange peeptoe pumps—but with those tights, it’s a nightmare. Heigl either forgot to shave her legs and needed a quick fix or is having trouble transitioning to fall. Either way, a simple sheer black pair would’ve done the job.

Hit: Leave it to Duchess Kate to wear just the right thing at the right time. While visiting a mosque on an official trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the royal wore an absolutely elegant look that appropriately covered her from head-to-toe in the least dowdy way possible. When she took her shoes off to enter the sacred space, she revealed that she was wearing nude tights. The difference between her and Heigl’s look? Not only were stockings a must for a situation like this in which the Duchess couldn’t show any skin, hers were perfectly color-matched to her skin tone, unlike Heigl’s ashy pair.

Miss: In Milan, Lady Gaga stepped out in a slashed Versace gown held together with oversized gold safety pins which was made famous by Liz Hurley in the 90s. Sure, the dress looks pretty hot on Gaga, and yes, the 90s are making a comeback, but isn't originality the name of Gaga’s game? You know she’s got unlimited designers knocking on her door begging her to wear their avant-garde pieces, so there's no need for her to redo an iconic look that was already such a showstopper on Liz.

Hit: While performing at WE Day in Toronto, Jennifer Hudson put her own spin on the Versace lace-up, wearing a dress from the Fall 2012 collection that featured tough grommet details. Though the designer’s latest lace-up looks will probably be best remembered as worn by Diane Kruger at Cannes, it’s cool that’s Hudson was willing to try to take the lace-up Versace plunge but still make it her own.
