If you look at Oyster #101’s cover of Hanne Gaby Odiele by Will Davidson, and think it’s not cool, then I hate to be the one to inform you (I don’t hate it that much actually), but you are mistaken. Several of the images have a bit of a pixilated, technically altered look on par with the “Let’s Get Digital!” caption on the cover, and the cover itself shows off a great use of Photoshop. (How often do we get a chance to say that? Slamming the use of Photoshop seems to be something of national pastime.) Initially it looks as though the image could have been painted, but when you look closer it’s clear that the technologies of our digital age are responsible for the alterations of color and content. Oyster even got in on the world’s current fashion obsession with cats (thanks Choupette). How timely.
In this issue, Oyster explores a bit of a science fiction/space exploration/alien theme in the editorial Earth to Hanne, which was styled by Stevie Dance, with hair and makeup by Tamara McNaughton and Karan Franjola. In the context of the editorial's sci-fi theme the cats on the cover remind me more of Saturday Night Live’s laser cats, than Choupette-style fashion cats… but I digress. (Maybe they’re laser-loving fashion cats? I don’t know why I’m obsessing over this. I’ll stop now. Sorry.)
“Very cool!” justaguy exclaimed after seeing the editorial.
Greenway doesn't really care about the actual theme of the images. “I need this for the sheer fact it’s Hanne,” he wrote. “She looks so good.”
So, run out and get this issue because Oyster is cool, or because you love Hanne, or because you love cats…just get it. The rest of the content is bound to be awesome too.
