Celebrity Stylist Stephen Knoll's Hair-Raising Take on the Spring 2013 Runways

Celebrity hairstylist Stephen Knoll opened his namesake Upper East Side salon in 1991 and he's been a go-to for some of the city's most discerning men and women ever since. His work has been featured in the pages of, among others, Vogue, InStyle, and Cosmopolitan, and he's tended to the hair of countless celebrities including Brooke Shields, Drew Barrymore, Cindy Crawford, Christie Brinkley, Bette Midler, Kristin Davis, Debra Messing, David Bowie, Iman, and Anne Hathaway. Knoll has also developed some of the best hair care products on the market.

We spoke to the well respected stylist and asked him what he thought about some of this season's most notable runway hair styles. See his (hilariously) honest answers below...

  • Derek Lam

"She looks like she just finished working out at the gym and is ready to go into hair and makeup. Clean, freshly trimmed ends wouldn't hurt either."

    Derek Lam
  • Dolce & Gabbana

"I love the accessories. The earrings are beautiful and I love the placement of the headband. Too bad the hair couldn't be as interesting as everything else."

    Dolce & Gabbana
  • Gucci

"Simply beautiful and created with what is obviously a very strong foundation. The hidden elastic is really secure which provides complete control over the hair. Very chic and beautifully achieved."

    Gucci
  • Gareth Pugh

"The swoop of hair on the side of the face is very, very tricky. It can look decidedly matronly. All I think when I look at this is a 2013 version of How the West was Won."

  • Jil Sander

    "There is no 'look' here."

    Jil Sander
  • Meadham Kirchhoff

"Very interesting twist on corkscrew curls. The shape could be a bit sexier by placing a curl closer to an eyebrow or just grazing a cheekbone. It's a little safe but I appreciate the creativity."

    Meadham Kirchhoff
  • Prada

"A female version of the comb over with height. Simply not good."

    Prada
  • The Blonds

"I love that it looks so obviously over the top fake. The black cap is cool and frames the face nicely."

    The Blonds
  • Moschino

"Conceptually, I like it but it should either be more off and messier or extremely polished. Actually, much messier could be great."

    Moschino
  • Versace

"Pretty but messy. Nice but not breaking any new ground."
