Italian luxury brand Trussardi has parted ways with designer Umit Benan, who was appointed creative director in 2011, Business of Fashion is reporting.
This wouldnât necessarily be big newsâ"Trussardi, despite being a popular heritage brand in Italy, flies relatively under the radar on the international scene, and the brand released a statement saying the split was mutualâ"except that Benan has exacerbated the situation with some telling tweets. You see, it seems the departure was not as amicable as Trussardiâs official statement made it seemâ"a fact, which Benan has made clear on Twitter.
On February 26, he tweeted, âSometimes Donât you just love saying Fuck You!â
A day later, in a series of tweets, he wrote:
âI have just completed my internship at Trussardiâ¦Remember the finale song at Trussardi womenâs show :) ROAD TO NOWHEREâ¦It should be official in a bit. :)⦠No wonder why I love Talking Heads so much. Thanks to everyone at Trussardi that has worked with me in the past 2 yearsâ¦Sorry. time to move onâ¦Dear all, As now I no longer work for Trussardi. ââ
So what could be the reason for the sudden split? According to Trussardi, it was the natural next step after Benanâs contract was upâ"though it could also be the mixed reviews Benan received while heading up the brand. Benan told BoF, âIn the end, there were just too many visions in one company,â and added that he looked forward to focusing more on his own namesake menswear line.
Then again, the reason may have been far more personal. After the announcement, Benan tweeted, âYou canât hire me and ask me to shave. Doesnât make sense :)â
While weâre sure there were plenty of other contributing factors, Benanâs tweet is interesting to note because it speaks to the growing pressure designers face to not only design but be a figurehead. Itâs not enough these days to design clothes people want to buy, you have to have the face to go along with it. And, if Benanâs tweet is to be believed, Trussardi wanted a face with decidedly less facial hair.
