      <p>On Tuesday afternoon, he stepped behind his barber chair at the Skyland Barber Shop, grabbed a brush and worked it through the protruding, salt-and-pepper hair on his face. His beard, normally a lot shorter, hung down to the top of his Harley Davidson shirt. </p><p>Gilbert says his beard is something he could never imagine being without. In fact, he's never even thought about shaving it. It's become a way of life.</p><p>And that's the case for many people who live in the foothills and mountains. Beards mean more than fashion. </p><p>Facial hair has always been an art, with styles such as the modern goatee, the long, white ZZ Top look, the Santa Claus look and, most recently, the long, fat beards like the ones worn by the Robertson family on television's "Duck Dynasty."</p><p>Gilbert's goal is to grow his beard down to his waistline. His desire for a beard grew from the lack of a desire to shave, he said. </p><p>"We all had long hair back in the day," Gilbert said. "We'   re talking about the late 1960s."</p><p>The desire to avoid a daily shave is just one of many reasons behind furry faces in Henderson County. People from all walks of life grow beards.</p><p>Bearded for the Gospel</p><p>Chuck Kuester's beard started out as freedom of expression. The 63-year-old had just been discharged from the Marines and he "wanted to look as non-Marine as possible at the time."</p><p>"I didn't have any money," he said, "but I did have freedom."</p><p>Almost immediately, the facial hair felt like a part of his personality.</p><p>"From the moment it stopped itching, it felt like I was meant to be a bearded man," he said. </p><p>As Kuester has aged, however, the long, white hair on his face has taken on a new role. Now Kuester uses his beard to bond and connect with Christian men. He found the national group Bearded Gospel Men, and decided to start a local chapter.</p><p>Bearded Gospel Men WNC started on Facebook, and the group, using their beards as a commo   nality, was brought together to "glorify God." The group has 75 likes on Facebook, and at least 16 of those men want to start meeting monthly.</p><p>"It's more of a fellowship thing and to make those smooth, shaving men jealous," Kuester said.</p><p>Society of beards</p><p>For some men, beards are definitely a lifestyle. It comes with the mountain region and doing mountainous things. That's the case for a group of guys that get together on the first Thursday of every month to ride bikes and hang out at a local restaurant.</p><p>The group started after Chad Banner, an agent with the Brevard Insurance Agency, went to a wedding in Charleston. He discovered the Holy City Beard and Mustache Society, then came home and shared the idea with his friends.</p><p>"The core group of us had beards," he said, so all of his friends jumped on the concept, and the Pisgah Beard Society was born. Banner is the president of the society.</p><p>One of the society's key members is Wes Dickson. Dic   kson, 36, is the owner of Sycamore Cycles in Brevard and Hendersonville. Dickson is not just a business owner, but also a member of the Brevard City Council.</p><p>His wife has never seen him without a beard, he joked. He began growing his beard in 2000, and it's a product of the world around him, he said.</p><p>"A lot of people I dealt with day in and day out had beards," he said of growing up in Pisgah.</p><p>And then there are his current surroundings. Dickson is a mountain biker and he lives that rugged, outdoor lifestyle.</p><p>"There's some lifestyle built into it," he said. "There's a good portion of mountain bikers that have beards."</p><p>Bearded identity</p><p>John Williams, 37, has taught science at North Henderson High School for the past seven years. He's also an assistant wrestling coach. He's been growing his beard for the past 20 years. </p><p>It's been short, long and has even trimmed down to a goatee. The one thing it hasn't been is â€" gone. And Williams d   oesn't plan to shave it. It's a part of who he is. </p><p>The identity factor is why many men say they have grown beards, kept them and refused to shave them.</p><p>"Everything (in society) is changing so much," Williams said about the acceptability of beards. "Individuality is more important these days."</p><p>Beards don't get stares anymore, he said, and shows such as "Duck Dynasty" have driven the look into popularity. </p><p>For Dickson, even politics hasn't changed his desire to keep his beard. To shave his beard would be to alter his identity, he said.</p><p>"It's just one of those things," he said. "I've never hid from who I am. I am who I am."</p><p>As Dickson said, the trend may stem from a man's surroundings, family and friends, but for whatever reason, beards are becoming popular again.</p><p>"It seems to be picking up as the cool thing to do," Pisgah Beard Society's Banner said. <div id='summary6747006017961417845'><strong>Great Facial Hair: A Little Piece of Baseball's Unique Culture - Purple Row</strong><br/><br/><div><div class="sbn-entry-body-text">              <p>One of the things that makes baseball such a great sport is the culture that goes along with it. Baseball isnâ€™t just a game to true baseball fans. It stretches beyond the playing field and infiltrates our very beings. From the minor leagues all the way up to the majors there is a distinct culture that goes along with being a part of baseball.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">There are so many aspects of that culture that they simply canâ€™t all be identified in an article of this length<a href="http://www.purplerow.com/2013/3/8/4076808/the-greatest-baseball-commercial-ive-ever-seen" target="_blank"> Jay Tymkovich wrote last week about how a commercial affected him</a> as a baseball fan and <a href="http://www.purplerow.com/2013/3/9/4082200/my-pick-for-greatest-baseball-film-of-all-time-may-surprise-you" target="_blank">Drew Creasman wrote about a movie</a> that inspired him. Baseball is indeed a sport that can pull unique emotions out of a person and tug on their heart strings.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">So what makes baseball so unique in its culture? I will be focusing on one aspect of baseballâ€™s culture and that is facial hair.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">Obviously, facial hair is not exclusive to baseball, but it helps identify fans with baseball. When you think Goose Goosage, what do you think? Mustache. How about Rollie Fingers, Dennis Eckersley, Mike Schmidt and <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/108244/keith-hernandez" class="sbn-auto-link">Keith Hernandez</a>? Mustache. Or how about the caveman-esque beards sported by <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/4386/brian-wilson" class="sbn-auto-link">Brian Wilson</a>, <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/214/jayson-werth" class="sbn-auto-link">Jayson Werth</a> and now <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/69497/josh-reddick" class="sbn-auto-link">Josh Reddick</a>?  Then there are more unique facial garbs like <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/971/scott-spiezio" class="sbn-auto-link">Scott Spiezio</a>â€™s red soul patch and the ever changing facial hair that <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/495/ryan-sp   ilborghs" class="sbn-auto-link">Ryan Spilborghs</a> used to sport. And who has a hard time remembering <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/490/todd-helton" class="sbn-auto-link">Todd Helton</a> without his thick goatee?</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">Of course some of the most distinctive facial styles belong to that of closers. For some reason, closers seem to think that having some ridiculous type of facial hair will increase their success rate. I think <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/628/mariano-rivera" class="sbn-auto-link">Mariano Rivera</a> would beg to differ, but nonetheless the attitude remains.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">Brian Wilson and his replacement in San Francisco, <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/33919/sergio-romo" class="sbn-auto-link">Sergio Romo</a>, both sported big black beards. <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/31144/jason-motte" class="sbn-auto-link">Jason Motte</a> in St. Louis might actually have had a Cardinal nesting underneath his chin last season. <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/4257/joel-hanrahan" class="sbn-auto-link">Joel Hanrahan</a> looked like an actual pirate closing for Pittsburgh. Sticking with the pirate theme, <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/85846/john-axford" class="sbn-auto-link">John Axford</a> of the <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/milwaukee-brewers" class="sbn-auto-link">Brewers</a> looked like Captain Morgan and <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/32970/chris-perez" class="sbn-auto-link">Chris Perez</a> of the <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/cleveland-india   ns" class="sbn-auto-link">Indians</a> just lookedâ€¦homeless. Whether itâ€™s intimidation or something else entirely, itâ€™s clear that some closers think looking the part is almost as important as playing the part.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">Baseball players past and present are often identified with their facial hair. Maybe itâ€™s the long road trips and late nights that contribute to it, or as I like to think, itâ€™s just part of being a baseball player. Of course, the <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/new-york-yankees" class="sbn-auto-link">Yankees</a> are an exception. Many players have had to part with their facial hair in order to become a member of the evil empire, the most recent casualty being <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/175/kevin-youkilis" class="sbn-auto-link">Kevin Youkilis</a>. Iâ€™m not sure why the Yankees wonâ€™t let baseball players be baseball players, but with their payroll I would shave too. Aside from their strict no facial hair policy, it is certainly easy to see how facial hair plays a role in baseballâ€™s unique culture.</p>

Maybe itâ€™s the long road trips and late nights that contribute to it, or as I like to think, itâ€™s just part of being a baseball player. Of course, the <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/new-york-yankees" class="sbn-auto-link">Yankees</a> are an exception. Many players have had to part with their facial hair in order to become a member of the evil empire, the most recent casualty being <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/175/kevin-youkilis" class="sbn-auto-link">Kevin Youkilis</a>. Iâ€™m not sure why the Yankees wonâ€™t let baseball players be baseball players, but with their payroll I would shave too. Aside from their strict no facial hair policy, it is certainly easy to see how facial hair plays a role in baseballâ€™s unique culture.</p>

You do an archeological dig for the waxing strip, peel the random Band-Aid off of it and promptly affix it to your upper lip.</p>    <p>"WAX IT ON THE COUNT OF THREE!" you yell, and you swear that the sound you are hearing is the very last shard of your self-respect shattering on the floor.</p>    <p>She obeys.</p>    <p>This morning I attended a Mary Kay party with this same friend. She requested that she go by the pseudonym "Giselle." That name has always represented the term for a bodily substance college boys laugh about, but whatever. She waxed my upper lip, so I'm probably going to let it go.</p>    <p>So, anyway, "Giselle" was sitting next to me, applying foundation like a normal person, and I was tweezing away. "Does anyone else have horrible facial hair? What do you ladies do about it?"</p>    <p>"Pluck it."</p>    <p>"Wax it."</p>    <p>"Shave it."</p>    <p>"Steam clean it."</p>    <p>True story: Once I was dating this guy I'd met on Match.com. Sorry, Dad. Yes, I was dumb. So anyway, we were hanging out in the living room and he started tugging on my face. Dave Matthews was crooning "Satelliiiiiiiiiite, in my eyeeeees..."</p>    <p>"OW! That hurts, Brett!"</p>    <p>"Um, Rachel? That's a hair. Attached to your face." </p>    <p>Stark white, right along my jaw line, and about two inches long.</p>    <p>I spent that night updating my Match.com profile and nursing my pride.</p>    <p>For some reason, I could handle the pain of an erupting ectopic pregnancy and a post-partum hemmorhage that left my tubeless uterus in the landfill, but apparently, I can't handle the pain of a facial hair being pulled.</p>    <p>The best time to pluck, FYI, is on the way to church. It's the only time I'm in the passenger seat. As we're rolling the rolling toy box out of the garage, Scott's eye catches a glimmer of the tweezer in my hand in the late morning sun.</p>    <p>"Can you at least put the tweezers down before we roll into the church parking lot?" </p>    <p>"Well, that depends. Do you want to continue to feel like you're making out with Sasquatch?"</p>    <p>This is the time when the kids are usually eager to interject, especially after I define Sasquatch.</p>    <p>"Yeah! Mommy's a big bear man!" they cheer.</p>    <p>The people at my church are super awesome and gracious and kind, so even if there are bats in the cave or I'm sporting Frankenstein's sideburns, no one's going to say a thing... except "Giselle."</p>    <p>I see her coming at me down the hall, and I'm proud to show her my hairless upper lip.</p>    <p>She starts laughing after we hug.</p>    <p>"Rach? Did a drunk guy apply your eye liner?"</p>    <p>Yes. <div id='summary6296097220750539825'><strong>Great Facial Hair: A Little Piece of Baseball's Unique Culture - Purple Row</strong><br/><br/><div><div class="sbn-entry-body-text">              <p>One of the things that makes baseball such a great sport is the culture that goes along with it. Baseball isnâ€™t just a game to true baseball fans. It stretches beyond the playing field and infiltrates our very beings. From the minor leagues all the way up to the majors there is a distinct culture that goes along with being a part of baseball.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">There are so many aspects of that culture that they simply canâ€™t all be identified in an article of this length<a href="http://www.purplerow.com/2013/3/8/4076808/the-greatest-baseball-commercial-ive-ever-seen" target="_blank"> Jay Tymkovich wrote last week about how a commercial affected him</a> as a baseball fan and <a href="http://www.purplerow.com/2013/3/9/4082200/my-pick-for-greatest-baseball-film-of-all-time-may-surprise-you" target="_blank">Drew Creasman wrote about a movie</a> that inspired him. Baseball is indeed a sport that can pull unique emotions out of a person and tug on their heart strings.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">So what makes baseball so unique in its culture? I will be focusing on one aspect of baseballâ€™s culture and that is facial hair.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">Obviously, facial hair is not exclusive to baseball, but it helps identify fans with baseball. When you think Goose Goosage, what do you think? Mustache. How about Rollie Fingers, Dennis Eckersley, Mike Schmidt and <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/108244/keith-hernandez" class="sbn-auto-link">Keith Hernandez</a>? Mustache. Or how about the caveman-esque beards sported by <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/4386/brian-wilson" class="sbn-auto-link">Brian Wilson</a>, <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/214/jayson-werth" class="sbn-auto-link">Jayson Werth</a> and now <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/69497/josh-reddick" class="sbn-auto-link">Josh Reddick</a>?  Then there are more unique facial garbs like <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/971/scott-spiezio" class="sbn-auto-link">Scott Spiezio</a>â€™s red soul patch and the ever changing facial hair that <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/495/ryan-sp   ilborghs" class="sbn-auto-link">Ryan Spilborghs</a> used to sport. And who has a hard time remembering <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/490/todd-helton" class="sbn-auto-link">Todd Helton</a> without his thick goatee?</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">Of course some of the most distinctive facial styles belong to that of closers. For some reason, closers seem to think that having some ridiculous type of facial hair will increase their success rate. I think <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/628/mariano-rivera" class="sbn-auto-link">Mariano Rivera</a> would beg to differ, but nonetheless the attitude remains.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">Brian Wilson and his replacement in San Francisco, <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/33919/sergio-romo" class="sbn-auto-link">Sergio Romo</a>, both sported big black beards. <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/31144/jason-motte" class="sbn-auto-link">Jason Motte</a> in St. Louis might actually have had a Cardinal nesting underneath his chin last season. <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/4257/joel-hanrahan" class="sbn-auto-link">Joel Hanrahan</a> looked like an actual pirate closing for Pittsburgh. Baseball isnâ€™t just a game to true baseball fans. It stretches beyond the playing field and infiltrates our very beings. From the minor leagues all the way up to the majors there is a distinct culture that goes along with being a part of baseball.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">There are so many aspects of that culture that they simply canâ€™t all be identified in an article of this length<a href="http://www.purplerow.com/2013/3/8/4076808/the-greatest-baseball-commercial-ive-ever-seen" target="_blank"> Jay Tymkovich wrote last week about how a commercial affected him</a> as a baseball fan and <a href="http://www.purplerow.com/2013/3/9/4082200/my-pick-for-greatest-baseball-film-of-all-time-may-surprise-you" target="_blank">Drew Creasman wrote about a movie</a> that inspired him. Baseball is indeed a sport that can pull unique emotions out of a person and tug on their heart strings.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">So what makes baseball so unique in its culture? I will be focusing on one aspect of baseballâ€™s culture and that is facial hair.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">Obviously, facial hair is not exclusive to baseball, but it helps identify fans with baseball. When you think Goose Goosage, what do you think? Mustache. How about Rollie Fingers, Dennis Eckersley, Mike Schmidt and <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/108244/keith-hernandez" class="sbn-auto-link">Keith Hernandez</a>? Mustache. Or how about the caveman-esque beards sported by <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/4386/brian-wilson" class="sbn-auto-link">Brian Wilson</a>, <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/214/jayson-werth" class="sbn-auto-link">Jayson Werth</a> and now <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/69497/josh-reddick" class="sbn-auto-link">Josh Reddick</a>?  Then there are more unique facial garbs like <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/971/scott-spiezio" class="sbn-auto-link">Scott Spiezio</a>â€™s red soul patch and the ever changing facial hair that <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/495/ryan-sp   ilborghs" class="sbn-auto-link">Ryan Spilborghs</a> used to sport. And who has a hard time remembering <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/490/todd-helton" class="sbn-auto-link">Todd Helton</a> without his thick goatee?</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">Of course some of the most distinctive facial styles belong to that of closers. For some reason, closers seem to think that having some ridiculous type of facial hair will increase their success rate. I think <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/628/mariano-rivera" class="sbn-auto-link">Mariano Rivera</a> would beg to differ, but nonetheless the attitude remains.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">Brian Wilson and his replacement in San Francisco, <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/33919/sergio-romo" class="sbn-auto-link">Sergio Romo</a>, both sported big black beards. <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/31144/jason-motte" class="sbn-auto-link">Jason Motte</a> in St. Louis might actually have had a Cardinal nesting underneath his chin last season. <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/4257/joel-hanrahan" class="sbn-auto-link">Joel Hanrahan</a> looked like an actual pirate closing for Pittsburgh. Sticking with the pirate theme, <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/85846/john-axford" class="sbn-auto-link">John Axford</a> of the <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/milwaukee-brewers" class="sbn-auto-link">Brewers</a> looked like Captain Morgan and <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/32970/chris-perez" class="sbn-auto-link">Chris Perez</a> of the <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/cleveland-india   ns" class="sbn-auto-link">Indians</a> just lookedâ€¦homeless. Whether itâ€™s intimidation or something else entirely, itâ€™s clear that some closers think looking the part is almost as important as playing the part.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">Baseball players past and present are often identified with their facial hair. Maybe itâ€™s the long road trips and late nights that contribute to it, or as I like to think, itâ€™s just part of being a baseball player. Of course, the <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/new-york-yankees" class="sbn-auto-link">Yankees</a> are an exception. Many players have had to part with their facial hair in order to become a member of the evil empire, the most recent casualty being <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/175/kevin-youkilis" class="sbn-auto-link">Kevin Youkilis</a>. Iâ€™m not sure why the Yankees wonâ€™t let baseball players be baseball players, but with their payroll I would shave too. Aside from their strict no facial hair policy, it is certainly easy to see how facial hair plays a role in baseballâ€™s unique culture.</p>

Iâ€™m not sure why the Yankees wonâ€™t let baseball players be baseball players, but with their payroll I would shave too. Baseball isnâ€™t just a game to true baseball fans. It stretches beyond the playing field and infiltrates our very beings. From the minor leagues all the way up to the majors there is a distinct culture that goes along with being a part of baseball.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">There are so many aspects of that culture that they simply canâ€™t all be identified in an article of this length<a href="http://www.purplerow.com/2013/3/8/4076808/the-greatest-baseball-commercial-ive-ever-seen" target="_blank"> Jay Tymkovich wrote last week about how a commercial affected him</a> as a baseball fan and <a href="http://www.purplerow.com/2013/3/9/4082200/my-pick-for-greatest-baseball-film-of-all-time-may-surprise-you" target="_blank">Drew Creasman wrote about a movie</a> that inspired him. Baseball is indeed a sport that can pull unique emotions out of a person and tug on their heart strings.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">So what makes baseball so unique in its culture? I will be focusing on one aspect of baseballâ€™s culture and that is facial hair.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">Obviously, facial hair is not exclusive to baseball, but it helps identify fans with baseball. When you think Goose Goosage, what do you think? Mustache. How about Rollie Fingers, Dennis Eckersley, Mike Schmidt and <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/108244/keith-hernandez" class="sbn-auto-link">Keith Hernandez</a>? Mustache. Or how about the caveman-esque beards sported by <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/4386/brian-wilson" class="sbn-auto-link">Brian Wilson</a>, <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/214/jayson-werth" class="sbn-auto-link">Jayson Werth</a> and now <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/69497/josh-reddick" class="sbn-auto-link">Josh Reddick</a>? blogâ€¦<a href="http://www.hallofverygood.com/">The Hall of Very Good</a>.Â  So you should not be surprised that this is happening.Â  I just can not help myself.Â  Â </p>  <p>At this point, it would be silly to roll out some <strong><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/axforjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-reviewingthebrew.com" target="_blank">John Axford</a></strong> mustache facts because lately my boy has been rocking the beard.Â  That being the case, I decided to look into some of the gnarliest facial hairÂ in film historyÂ for our boy.Â  Focusing more on beards, orÂ facialÂ accesoriesÂ formerly known as beards.Â  As you may or may not know, Mr. Axford has a degree in film from Notre Dame.Â  Â And these are not just any options, these are the types of faceÂ blankets that will strike fear into all whoÂ oppose them.Â </p>  <p>For the official record, I would like to point out that in our predictions article last month I said that John Axford would rock a beard at some point this season.Â  That has already come to passâ€¦so I am kind of a sorcerer now.Â </p>  <p>**Due to legal reasons, I am unable to post Dr. King Schultz </a>(Django Unchained)- If you have not seen Django Unchained, you probably should catch that.Â Â It isÂ beautifully violent, andÂ the facial hair is out of sight.Â  What makes Dr. Schultzâ€™s (Christoph Waltz) beard so amazing is that it doubles as a handle-bar mustache!!Â  Not only do you have the beard to keep your face warm, but when you feel particularly saucyâ€¦you give your stache handles a little twirl.Â  Any MLB player who saw this movie and then stands in the batters box to face The Ax, while cower in fear.Â  Maybe he has a tiny single-bullet gun up his sleeve?Â  Or a nasty 97 mph cut fastball?Â  Either way, this particular face ornament would be legendary.Â </p>  <p>2) <a Pai Mei </a>(Kill Bill Vol.2)- I promise that these are the only twoÂ Quentin Tarantino movie finalists.Â  But who isnâ€™t intimidated by a fu manchu that hangs down to mid-chest?Â  The answer is no one.Â  Can you imagine Axford striking someone outâ€¦walking around the moundâ€¦stroking his facial hairâ€¦and then throwing it behind his back?Â  This move would be both intimidating and a slap in the face of would be batters.Â  Maybe that facial hair comes with in   structions for the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique, I donâ€™t know.Â  If this were to become a reality, the growing needs to begin now.Â  It could be ready to unleash just in time for a playoff run in September.</p>  <p>3) <a the Butcher </a>(Gangs of New York) â€" This would be a new take on an old classic.Â  Yes, John would have to bring back the handle bar mustache and keep that baby nice and waxed (which was not a problem in 2011).Â  Here is the catch, now you have to add some sweet turn of the century mutton chops to the equation.Â  In the film, Daniel Day Lewis is one of the baddest dudes on the planetâ€¦in large part because of that amazingly sophisticate   d manscaping.Â  I already know that #59 can rock the handlebar, but with the current beard it would be only too easy to shave that into some rocking mutton burns.Â </p>  <p>4) <a Captain Barbossa </a>(Pirates of the Caribbean 1-4) â€" You may be asking, â€œLou, why him and not Capt. Jack Sparrowâ€.Â  The answer is simpleâ€¦chin braids are dumb and pirates were not the type of people who would go out of their way to sit in front of a mirror so that they could braid their chin hair.Â  There I said it.Â  Barbossa looks like a real pirate.Â  I can look at that guy and genuinely believe that he was at sea 340 days a year   .Â  What makes this particular facial scraggle unique, is itâ€™s lack of fullness.Â  This is an unhealthy beard.Â  Maybe that is what happens when you have scurvyâ€¦or are undead for many years.Â  In spite of all that, this beard would look terrifying on Axford.Â  Plus, we could all pitch in and get him a little monkey who never seems to dieâ€¦plus we cold teach it to steal gold coins.Â </p>  <p>5) <a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1024&bih=527&q=Dr+King+Schultz&oq=Dr+King+Schultz&gs_l=img.3...797.3688.0.3891.15.9.0.0.0.0.0.0..0.0...0.0...1ac.1.6.img.Ehl_-xBDz70#hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=dr+loveless+wild+wild+west&oq=dr+loveless+wild+wild+west&gs_l=img.3..0l2j0i24.2562.4765.8.4968.15.6.0.8.8.1.328.578.2-1j1.2.0...0.0...1c.1.6.img.OfDoP9NBhQg&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.43828540,d.b2I&fp=9abbdecf465fd183&biw=1024&bih=527">The Dr. Loveless </a>(Wild Wild West) â€" Look, we all know this movie suckedâ€¦big time.Â  However, British master actor/director Kenneth Branagh rocks one of the most intricate facial hair configurations of all time.Â  In the old west, the facial hair made the man..or in the case of this movie, half of a man.Â  Either way, when you consider that this was done with an old school razor (in theory, of course obviously Hollywoo   d has fancy tricks), it makes this one of the baddest looking beards in the history of film.Â  The mustache portion is pretty standard, but the beardâ€¦oh, the beard.Â  In the region commonly known as a soul patch, now resides what looks like a whales tale.Â  Then, rather then having facial hair running up the side of his lips, he has cleaned that outâ€¦and given his beard wings.Â  WINGS!!!Â  ON HIS BEARD!!!!Â  Ridiculous?Â  Kind of.Â  Amazing?Â  Yup.Â  I would love to see our Canadian closer slamming the door while rocking this amazing facial affair.Â </p>  <p>Â </p>  <p>Alright John, I know you are going to read this.Â  So, which one will it be?Â  How about you, the readers, what would you like to see Axford done this season?</p>

Think about if a girl had a full mustache and she was coming in to kiss you. It would hurt! And a guy would whine about it, just like they whine when a sweater's not the softest thing they've ever touched. So I feel like it's only fair that guys keep a groomed face.</p>  <p><strong>Q: So basically if you're planning to kiss a girl, you should be clean?</strong></p>  <p><strong>A:</strong> Yeah. Keep it clean. That stubble gives girls rashes, and it also makes a girl break out because of hair oils. <div id='summary587841612497934206'><strong>Great Facial Hair: A Little Piece of Baseball's Unique Culture - Purple Row</strong><br/><br/><div><div class="sbn-entry-body-text">              <p>One of the things that makes baseball such a great sport is the culture that goes along with it. Baseball isnâ€™t just a game to true baseball fans. It stretches beyond the playing field and infiltrates our very beings. From the minor leagues all the way up to the majors there is a distinct culture that goes along with being a part of baseball.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">There are so many aspects of that culture that they simply canâ€™t all be identified in an article of this length<a href="http://www.purplerow.com/2013/3/8/4076808/the-greatest-baseball-commercial-ive-ever-seen" target="_blank"> Jay Tymkovich wrote last week about how a commercial affected him</a> as a baseball fan and <a href="http://www.purplerow.com/2013/3/9/4082200/my-pick-for-greatest-baseball-film-of-all-time-may-surprise-you" target="_blank">Drew Creasman wrote about a movie</a> that inspired him. Baseball is indeed a sport that can pull unique emotions out of a person and tug on their heart strings.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">So what makes baseball so unique in its culture? I will be focusing on one aspect of baseballâ€™s culture and that is facial hair.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">Obviously, facial hair is not exclusive to baseball, but it helps identify fans with baseball. When you think Goose Goosage, what do you think? Mustache. How about Rollie Fingers, Dennis Eckersley, Mike Schmidt and <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/108244/keith-hernandez" class="sbn-auto-link">Keith Hernandez</a>? Mustache. Or how about the caveman-esque beards sported by <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/4386/brian-wilson" class="sbn-auto-link">Brian Wilson</a>, <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/214/jayson-werth" class="sbn-auto-link">Jayson Werth</a> and now <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/69497/josh-reddick" class="sbn-auto-link">Josh Reddick</a>?  Then there are more unique facial garbs like <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/971/scott-spiezio" class="sbn-auto-link">Scott Spiezio</a>â€™s red soul patch and the ever changing facial hair that <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/495/ryan-sp   ilborghs" class="sbn-auto-link">Ryan Spilborghs</a> used to sport. And who has a hard time remembering <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/490/todd-helton" class="sbn-auto-link">Todd Helton</a> without his thick goatee?</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">Of course some of the most distinctive facial styles belong to that of closers. For some reason, closers seem to think that having some ridiculous type of facial hair will increase their success rate. I think <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/628/mariano-rivera" class="sbn-auto-link">Mariano Rivera</a> would beg to differ, but nonetheless the attitude remains.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">Brian Wilson and his replacement in San Francisco, <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/33919/sergio-romo" class="sbn-auto-link">Sergio Romo</a>, both sported big black beards. <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/31144/jason-motte" class="sbn-auto-link">Jason Motte</a> in St. Louis might actually have had a Cardinal nesting underneath his chin last season. <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/4257/joel-hanrahan" class="sbn-auto-link">Joel Hanrahan</a> looked like an actual pirate closing for Pittsburgh. Sticking with the pirate theme, <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/85846/john-axford" class="sbn-auto-link">John Axford</a> of the <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/milwaukee-brewers" class="sbn-auto-link">Brewers</a> looked like Captain Morgan and <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/32970/chris-perez" class="sbn-auto-link">Chris Perez</a> of the <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/cleveland-india   ns" class="sbn-auto-link">Indians</a> just lookedâ€¦homeless. Whether itâ€™s intimidation or something else entirely, itâ€™s clear that some closers think looking the part is almost as important as playing the part.</p>
  <p class="MsoNormal">Baseball players past and present are often identified with their facial hair. Maybe itâ€™s the long road trips and late nights that contribute to it, or as I like to think, itâ€™s just part of being a baseball player. Of course, the <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/teams/new-york-yankees" class="sbn-auto-link">Yankees</a> are an exception. Many players have had to part with their facial hair in order to become a member of the evil empire, the most recent casualty being <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/players/175/kevin-youkilis" class="sbn-auto-link">Kevin Youkilis</a>. Iâ€™m not sure why the Yankees wonâ€™t let baseball players be baseball players, but with their payroll I would shave too. Aside from their strict no facial hair policy, it is certainly easy to see how facial hair plays a role in baseballâ€™s unique culture.</p>
