Massimo Dutti Lands in Toronto

The glitterati descended upon Toronto's Eaton Centre Wednesday night for the unveiling of Massimo Dutti's first North American store. The Spanish mega-retailer, founded in 1985, already boasts a commanding presence across Europe, but plans to continue its expansion across the pond. In addition to the Toronto store, the brand will also open at locations in Washington D.C. and New York City. So what can you expect to see?

The fact that Massimo Dutti is the big brother of clothing retailer Zara is hard to miss. The new store is crammed with preppy tailoring, chunky knits, and work-appropriate handbags (read: they're big enough to fit an iPad and a small makeup counter), albeit at a slightly higher price point than Zara. Are the extra dollars worth it? Absolutely, since I'm told that every minor trim is leather, the knits are 100% wool, and the angora is buttery soft.

Perusing the new store, it's apparent that the collection caters towards the type-A career gal, who craves a style that is personal, while adding touches of fashion trends set on international catwalks. Likewise, the men's collection appeals to the urban, contemporary man, who likes his neckties in silk and his newsboy hats in abundance.

Choice pieces include the burgundy moccasins with tassels ($148), the tailored pique blazers, and cable knit capes with buckle ($135).

At 5,000-square-feet, the Toronto shop (located on the Eaton centre's third floor) is on the smaller side of the shopping space spectrum, but still offers an impressive selection of wares strategically arranged around chic furniture and, of course, a life-size horse centerpiece. It's open to the public as of August 30.
