The award to best short hairstyle in 2014 so far goes to Bradley Cooper. Whereas many cropped cuts can look cookie cutter, the style Cooper sported for the Oscars combines a great shape with not-too-fussy styling. "His hair reminds me of JFK, Jr." says Losi, who frequently styles Cooper's hair for magazine editorials and here explains the best way to go about getting the same look.

The cropped style is a good fit for anyone who has thick, dense, and curly hair - a type which can be a difficult to keep long because it becomes so unruly and also looks bland when too short. It'll also works well on guys with straight and thick hair. RELATED: Hair Care Without Chemicals

To ask for a cut like Cooper's, tell your barber you want short hair that is not one length all over. "It's tapered and textured on the side and blended into the top, which cuts the density of the hair and creates movement," says Losi. The top is left a little longer and is even more texturized. "This way you can get height and style, if you go too short, you have no options," she says.

The best part of a cut like this is that, while it looks sophisticated, it requires very little maintenance. Simply wet hair and use a light gel. After towel drying, rub about about a dime sized drop of gel through to break it up and leave it in until it dries. Ditch the comb, and run your hands front to back through it, following your hair's natural direction. If you prefer, you can use paste instead of gel. "Emulsify just a little in your hands and start spreading it through the hair, but from the back so you don't get a streak of product in the front. Then style as you would with the gel."

The one downside: You'll need to get more haircuts. Keeping a short style looking neat requires a cut every four to six weeks.
