As red carpet award seasons go, 2013's hasn't exactly been vintage. Long, safe and strapless â" with the odd rogue halter-neck â" does not make for a particularly exciting series of fashion parades.
Sadly, the Baftas' sartorial offerings didn't improve things that much. No one laid an egg, wore a Gap turtle neck or even thought to invite Cher. Instead, the rain sodden carpet featured many women dandering around with bare shoulders looking freezing.
One story on the carpet was surely the protocol of wearing a coat. As the impossibly good-looking Jennifer Lawrence first appeared on the carpet in flawless make up, she did so in a sensible wool overcoat. Soon this was ditched to reveal her sequin embellished strapless Dior gown, which was perfectly pretty but minus the coa t, somehow lacked edge.
Anne Hathaway also initially kept her coat on as she continued her current award season wardrobe exploration of minimalism. For the Baftas, this meant a British fashion nod with a black Burberry number. Though the most exciting this dress got was some metallic studding on it's top half though her sandals were rather nice.
Helen Mirren, top, tried to punk up the carpet with her flash of pink hair but sadly it couldn't distract from the odd beige affair she was actually wearing. Bold colour however did provide two of the night's biggest fashion hits. Marion Cotillard, right, in a yellow couture dress from Raf Simons's most recent Dior collection, complete with sheer peephole at the thigh, was a smash of gorgeousness while Jessica Chastain triumphed in a glorious royal blue, one-shouldered Roland Mouret dress, which set off her red hair a treat.
The most notable men's trend on the carpet was employing a beard to dress up a dull tux. Hugh Jackman, George Clooney , Joaquin Phoenix, Ben Affleck and Simon Pegg all sported variations on the facial fuzz theme. Clooney and Affleck also opted to wear wool overcoats and looked suitably dapper.
