Nicole Kidman's latest hairstyle

STUART PHILIPS reveals his incredible expert hair advice on Nicole Kidman's wavy hair

Does it suit her face shape? Yes

What face shape does Nicole Kidman have? Oval with a slight pointy jaw line

Can we improve the look? We could use our heat appliances to produce other interesting styles BUT the length and shape is about right Alternative looks for Nicole

Nicole's face is a good shape but because it's slim she has to be careful not to have the hair cut too long, or the complete opposite very short, or it may make her face appear too slim.

I think that Nicole needs hair around a certain length to give her that sexy feminine look.

The other problem is any extreme haircut will possibly make a middle age woman like Nicole look slightly older. You normally find women with slim faces over a certain age, if their hair is very long or short it seems to somehow age them slightly more.

I have mature clients of mine that ask if they grow their hair really long will it give them a youthful feel, my answer is quite the opposite as it's all about suitability rather than 'should I wear it a certain length because I'm becoming a certain age'.

Important factors when deciding on a new haircut for her should be: to slightly widen her face and to also create softness.

Nicole is an attractive lady but she doesn't have a naturally soft face, so I would either wave her hair as seen in the photo above snapped in March 2014, at ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live, (although I would wave it slightly more, as I think it would look even more feminine) or if straight and layered I would add some softness around the sides and back of her hairline, or even a very soft fringe.

Don't get me wrong, she would also look good with straight, one length hair but would need to be the perfect length.

I think the hairdresser who cut Nicole's hair in the first photo chose a good length for her face shape.

The photo above taken in June 2013 at the CMT Music Awards is a great length for her face.

It's not too long or too short. If she grew it a few inches longer and kept it straight it would possibly make her hair fall very flat on the sides, it would also make her face appear smaller. Celebrity Hairdresser Stuart Phillips giving expert advice on Nicole Kidman's wavy hair

What about a fringe? If you have a fairly small face like Nicole I would not wear a full fringe, this is because it will make a small face appear smaller. Also as discussed above Nicole has a slightly hard look to her face and a broken up fringe will appear much more feminine on her than a full heavy fringe.

As you can see from the photo above taken at the Variety's 5th Annual Power Of Women Event in October 2013, It's been put up with the fringe swept across, it's most definitely smart looking and I'm sure from the back it looks great but I think it's too groomed and hard looking from the front.

The photo above snapped in September 2013 at the Railway Man Premiere is a softer look for her. It may not be a fancy style but I think it works, it makes her look more feminine than the swept across fringe.

How to style your hair like Nicole Kidman

Appliances and products:

Hairdryer

Section clip

Medium size curling irons

Strong-hold mousse If your hair is straight and want to add some wave (similar to the first photo of Nicole), this is what you do...

1. After you've washed your hair, towel dry and add a strong hold mousse, make sure you place it first to the mid lengths and ends, then the smallest amount to your roots.

2. Blast dry with a hairdryer.

3. Start from the back by taking a horizontal section from ear to ear and roughly one inch high in thickness. Clip the rest of your hair out the way.

4. There are two ways to curl your hair, I prefer to wrap the hair around the irons rather than wrapping the irons around the hair, this way will give the hair more of a softer wave. This is done by opening up the irons and placing your section of hair half way down from the roots, then carefully wrap the hair around the open irons until you run out of hair.

The reason you curl half way up is to make your hair look very natural by keeping the roots straighter. Make sure to get as much hair as possible onto the irons, "be very careful not to burn your fingers, so as you start to run out of hair, slow down and watch your fingers.

Hold it on the irons for around 3-5 seconds, if your hair is a bit more resistant than normal then hold it for a couple of seconds longer.

5. When finished that row take another horizontal section and repeat the same way.

6 . For the sides, work towards your parting in the same manner as the back. On your last couple of side sections make sure when your wrapping the hair around the irons to do this away from your face, this will keep the waves directed back.

7. When you're finished curling, If you find the waves are a bit tight then gently ruffle your hair from side to side, this will loosen it a little more. This is why once you have achieved the perfect wave/curl do not keep touching your hair, as the heat from your hands will eventually take out all your hard work!

8. When you're happy place your head upside-down and spray some hairspray. Keep your head down for about 10 seconds, just enough time for the spray to dry. Now place your head upright and finish off by looking in the mirror and if needed tweaking the odd piece of hair into place. finish off with a little more spray.

For my face shape section bellow I refer to the first photo of Nicole

What to ask for, or keep away from if you have a long face shape

This is a perfect length and width for this face shape. - an oval shape face This is the same face shape as Nicole so it's perfect. - a heart shape face It would work but I would cut in a soft fringe that falls onto her forehead. This will give the illusion of your forehead looking slightly smaller. - a square shape face It would work with a few tweaks. I would round the entire outline at the bottom and sides, I would also cut in some very long rounded layers. - a round shape face

It would work but make sure that you keep the outline shape more square than round, this will help counteract your square face.
